I got into music after seeing Mike Oldfield perform "Tubular Bells" on TV in 1974. I thought this was something wonderful - completely different from anything in the pop charts, no singing, repetitive without being monotonous, and incredibly emotional and expressive. I started to play guitar but within a few months heard something even more incredible - Tangerine Dream in session on the John Peel radio show. At the time I loved the Space Invaders arcade games and this seemed like their perfect soundtrack, full of strange sounds and textures. Of course synthesizers like the big Moog systems were extremely expensive, but I got hold of a couple of electric keyboards and tape recorders, then had kit synths and sequencers built for me.
At University I used their ARP Odyssey and other synths and created concert backing videos in the college TV studio. My first job was on an electronic music magazine and I reviewed all the new synths starting with the very first MIDI models as well as meeting some of the big names of the electronic music scene in the 1980's - Jean-Michel Jarre, Karlheinz Stockhausen, White Noise, Tangerine Dream and many others. I formed a label to help release my own music in 1985 and later released compilations including tracks personally offered by Isao Tomita, Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, Patrick Moraz, Karl Bartos of Kraftwerk and many others.
As well as playing many solo synthesizer concerts at venues including the London Planetarium, the Carnegie Science Center Planetarium Pittsburgh, the Franklin Institute Planetarium Philadelphia, and the Teatro Nacional, Brazilia I had the privilege of performing at the Royal Festival Hall, London with Damo Suzuki, the amazing improvising singer from the German rock band Can. Right now I'm developing several new solo album and band projects in the synthesizer, progressive rock and jazz/world fusion fields, including performances in the UK and USA of my own music and a piece by Terry Riley. I am also performing as a member of the legendary electronic music band White Noise.

Holy shoot, I thought I recognised the name and face!
I really enjoyed the collab. work you did with Dave at MDX uni the other day. Was a pleasure to meet you both and I'll look out for a copy of your book.
Best regards, (don't ditch the Wakeman style cape!)
Thanks very much for replying, Mark! Yes, I'm finding your book very instructive. I'm a 'mature' student at Leeds Metropolitan University, so we've been using Max/MSP this year, that sort of thing. I don't have any real criticisms of your book (I'd hoped there were some VCS3 samples on the CD, but I know how rare this synth is now). It's possible , however, by the end of the decade, that you'll be able to write two books, one on analogue synths, and one on virtual ones! My ears aren't fooled by the latter (the Moog just sounds richer, it's as simple as that!), but it seems like that's the way everything's going, and then, of course, there's the cost. I came across a Jupiter 4 in Leeds last year, but it was £700: I simply can't afford to pay that much for a synth that might not work properly anymore.
Anyway, best of luck with your future projects....perhaps I'll be able to give you some more helpful suggestions when I've actually finished reading your comprehensive tome!
Hey Mark! Thanks so much for your reply to my Gumtree add. You're a live member of White Noise?!!! I bought An Electric Storm in a rustic record store on CD and it remains one of my absolute favourite works - period! I wish I was old enough to have heard it in its heyday :(
BTW, The gear you have on display on your profile pic is most teasing :'(
Thanks for your message! "The Visitor" was one of those stand out tracks for me in my very early days of being into electronic music! It was inspiring! If you have a CD of that full version....I'd like to hear it!
I managed to follow in your footsteps some 10 years later by having a "Demo of the month" track on Sound on Sound...which got played on Radio 1!
Sadly I havent had the success you have since, but I still love this mad crazy world of electronic music!
Thank you sooooo much for your assistance and advice! I appreciated hearing from you and I will certainly look into saving files in a different way from now on.
By the way, your music is absolutely exquisite and supremely perfecto!
I wish you all the best in your tours around Europe and ultimately to America.

Hi, Mark, thanks for the add.
I'm so excited about your message. I'll try to post a mp3 player on my page with a large selection. I think this could take some time - as I still don't know how to do it, and my connection is so slow. But I'll do my best.
Thank you for your interest
