Markku Klami (born February 21, 1979 in Turku, Finland) studied music theory and solfège at the Music Academy of the Turku University of Applied Sciences in 2001-2006, graduating with Bachelor of Arts degree in June 2006. He has also studied musicology at the University of Turku in 2000-2001. Klami began his formal composition studies with Tuomo Teirilä in 2003. Since 2006 he has been continuing his composition studies with Tapio Tuomela at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland. He has also participated masterclasses and workshops led by Luigi Abbate, Anders Eliasson, Kimmo Hakola, Jouni Kaipainen, Magnus Lindberg, Bent Sørensen, Jukka Tiensuu and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra.
Klami's output includes works for orchestra and soloists and orchestra, chamber music, choral works, works for solo instrument as well as electronic music for short films. Klami’s works for orchestra have had success in national and international composition competitions. In 2004 he won the National Composition Competition of the Finnish Polytechnic Chamber Orchestra with his work Flow for string orchestra. The work was performed in orchestra's tour in Finland and Slovakia in 2004-2005. In 2006, sight - energy - vague - ocean, Klami's first work for symphony orchestra, received the shared First Prize in the SävellYS 2006 National Composition Competition organized by the Helsinki University Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra performed the work in Helsinki and Turku in April 2007. Klami's most extensive work to date, clarinet concerto FUME (2008), was selected to the Jury's list of recommended works in the 2nd International Uuno Klami Composition Competition in 2009. In total, 186 works from 27 countries participated the competition. Four works reached the finals and 17 works were selected to the list of recommended works.
In autumn 2006 the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE) celebrated their 80th anniversary. As a part of their anniversary YLE produced a program series featuring the youngest generation of Finnish contemporary composers. YLE selected eight young composers to be featured and interviewed in the program series, of which Klami was one of them.
Klami's works have been premiered and performed in various important festivals and concerts in Finland and abroad, including Rebus Festival 2009 (Milan, Italy), Nuovi Spazi Musicali Festival 2009 (Rome, Italy), Compositori a confronto Festival 2009 (Reggio Emilia, Italy), Ung Nordisk Musik 2007 (Reykjavík, Iceland), Musica Nova Helsinki 2007 & 2009, Avanti! Summer Sounds 2007 & 2008, Viitasaari Time of Music 2007, 2008 & 2009, SibaFest 2008, 30th Anniversary Festival of the Ears Open Society in 2007, Turku Music Festival 2007, the concert tour of the Italian guitarist Massimo Felici in Finland and Estonia in 2006, Kantakaupungin Kitarakonsertit Festival 2006, National Wind and Brass Music Days 2006, Kemiö Music Festival 2005 and on the concert tour of the Finnish Polytechnic Chamber Orchestra in Finland and Slovakia in 2004-2005.
Outside Finland his music has been performed in Estonia, Iceland, Italy, Slovakia and Sweden. Klami’s works have also been performed on YLE Radio 1, the national radio channel of the Finnish Broadcasting Company. In autumn 2009 Klami's works will receive several performances at major music festivals and concerts in Italy, Poland and Sweden.
Klami has received commissions to write works (amongst others) for Polytech Choir, Chorus Cathedralis Iuniorum, Kemiönsaari Music Guild, Helsinki Guitar Society and guitarist Patrik Kleemola.
Klami is the chairman of Ears Open Society. The society promotes the youngest generation of composers from and living in Finland by arranging concerts, performances and seminars. During Klami's time as the chairman the society has actively made contacts to young composers and festivals also on international level.
