Mark Moldre sings if the words come out and plays guitar when his fingers brush the strings
Professor Adam Lang left his gypsy life in a travelling circus to come and play Lap Steel, Banjo, Suitcase Drums, Guitar and conduct life threatening musical experiments
Reuben Wills is so laid back that he plays his bass one verse behind everybody else
Sophie Hutchings is a fresh daisy blowing in the breeze, she also plays piano
Scott Hutchings is surfing in Mexico, he left his drums behind
TROUBLED GENIUS EP
Influences
Sounds Like
Old typewriters and gramophones, glistening dark city streets, emerald green neon and lamplights, lost scruffy dogs, sepia 1970 snapshots and polaroids, fawn corduroy, opportunity shops, dusty discoveries in attics, winding country roads and windswept skies, the carnival on tuesday nights, chocolate brown valiants blowing black smoke, the buzzing of bees, a junk trolley with a wonky wheel, a battlescarred fridge with a broken seal, a rusty tin sign with one screw, the turning pages of old books
From The Press:
"I wish I had Mark Moldre’s gift for melodies. He’s got this pop thing completely sussed, and in a more equal world that would put him at the top of a heap that starts with Lennon/McCartney (and Harrison, let’s not diminish the intelligence of his work either) and takes you through Brian Wilson to Elvis Costello and Difford/Tilbrook...." Drum Media
"Mark Moldre, who, aside from playing "guitarsaplenty" also has a go at everything from Theremin to Mellotron, autoharp and thumb-tack piano, making him either a show off or a genius, maybe both" Australian Guitar
"Mark Moldre has the perfect rich honey pop voice, writes hook laden intelligent, sophisticated, creamy pop songs that shine with quality and depth and is a top notch guitarist to boot" Bucketfull Of Brains
FOR THE TROUBLED GENIUS EP:
"The immediate vocal association on title track is with Mark Everett from The Eels as Moldre huskily sings about a demise apparently inspired by the Phil Spector trial....‘The Songs That I’d Forgotten’ is an acoustic jaunt with a folk leaning that wouldn’t be out of place alongside Mercury Rev or The Felice Brothers. He has the knack of delivering a patient and infectious vocal melody...‘Hushabye Mountain’ appeared in the film Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang and it is Moldre doing his best Tom Waits take on the song. It creaks and rolls along like a drunken oompah band and with subtler singing and ghostly whistling it works gloriously; like a sepia-tinged afterthought.....The final track, ‘Milkwood Moon’, contains some wonderfully delicate guitar and piano touches and is the most beautiful moment on the EP. Reminiscent of some of Jamie Hutchings solo work (he has contributed vocals and slide guitar to The Waiting Room), it shows an open and honest approach to recording, allowing the space and air to fill the song as much as the notes being produced. Not a million miles from the more desolate moments of Ryan Adams it is the highlight of the EP. If Moldre is content to let these songs appear on a precursor EP then the forthcoming album will no doubt be a fine release from this fast maturing songwriter" DOUBTFUL SOUNDS
Here's what Midnight Oil's Rob Hirst had to say about the upcoming album "The Waiting Room":
"A beautifully produced album of melancholic melodies; sad, grand, scary. The Waiting Room is a collection of songs hand-crafted by a musician who's lived a lot, seen much, and has written it all down - for his own benefit, and
ours. One to keep. 4 stars"
As for my bio......Well, I was going to type out a whole lot of info about me in the 3rd person, you know, make it sound as though someone other than me was writing this....a professional.....but I decided against that. So.....
Dear Friends
My name is Mark Moldre and for the past few years I have been singer/guitarist in a band called Hitchcock's Regret. We've put three albums out in Australia and a couple o/s. On our last album, endless_intermission we met and worked with drummer/producer Tim Powles (The Church) and he and I got together again on this one along with producer Michael Carpenter.
Lately though I have felt that my musical compass has shifted somewhat,
and it's no longer pointing North by Northwest (a little Hitchcock
humour). I can feel a southerly change coming on.
This will be my first solo album. It's now all finished and I'm hoping to release it in early 2010. I recorded it with with my good friend, producer/musician Michael Carpenter and Tim Powles mixed. On The Waiting Room I had the pleasure of recording the album with a few of my childhood friends - Scott Hutchings on Drums, Sophie Hutchings added some of her bittersweet piano melodies and her brother Jamie Hutchings (Bluebottle Kiss) dropped by too - he sang with me on a few tracks and played some of his trademark slide guitar. Reuben Wills played bass and Adam Lang played banjo and lap slide. For a solo album I guess it was a bit of a family affair. The songs, however are lyrically quite personal. I guess it turned out a pretty lush, dreamy bunch of tunes. The style of music? I’m calling it sonic folk and the album I've named “The Waiting Room” - an apt title as anyone who has been waiting for the release will tell you.
I've just released the first EP containing a lead track from the album - Troubled Genius - a song inspired by the bizzare events surrounding the Phil Spector trial. The EP also contains a couple of bonus tracks that were recording during The Waiting Room sessions. I'll be following up with a second EP real soon......
I hope you'll enjoy it.
Thanks for stopping by
Mark Moldre
