Hip, classic Jazz, baby! We love Bill Evans, Chet Baker, Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk, Duke Ellington, Anita O'Day, Gene Krupa, Errol Garner, Keith Jarret, etc. Contemporaries like Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays (70's & 80's particularly). Also, tons of non-Jazz playahs like Steely Dan, the Dead, Los Lobos, Lyle Lovett, Zep, etc. No way to name 'em all, but you see where we're going here. . .
Mark has been playing music for a living for a decade-and-a-half. Before finding his full-time gig, Los Blancos, (www.myspace.com/losblancos; www.casablancos.com) he led his own group which slowly morphed into The Intention (see below), did some cruise ship work with David Salce (jazz trio), and freelanced for a couple of years playing up and down the East Coast and even Paris, France, but mostly in his home region in the Northeast.
After hooking up with Los Blancos, Mark has been enjoying a full gigging schedule approaching 200 shows per year for over 10 years. The band has recently been working with an east coast booking agent based out of Tallahassee, FL, Blues Boys and an L.A.-based Public Relations man, Doug Deutsch.
For the last couple of years, Mark has been writing a lot of songs on guitar and is now beginning to record the catalog. These first three will be used as demo material and can be heard in their entirety on this page.
The Intention
Mark Nanni and David Salce have been playing jazz music together for more than a decade. The styles have ranged from piano trio standard and original, to quintet all-original, to organ funk, to the stripped-down, intimate vocal jazz duo. The flavors have continued to evolve over the years, as have Mark's and David's roles as musicians in their respective communities (Syracuse and Ithaca, NY.) Both are influenced by and steeped in multiple styles of music and have made their livings over a wide range of musical opportunities, together and separately.
Nanni is a pianist, vocalist, composer, arranger and producer. Salce is the sympathetic rhythm on drum kit to all of their musical adventures. The chemistry between these musicians is what makes the Intention what it is: spontaneous, soulful, Neo-Traditional Party-Jazz music!
Over the years, The Intention has been just that, simmering on the back burner to Nanni's and Salce's other pursuits. However, with the recent accomplishment of securing two different community arts grants (see below) which yielded the latest recording, The Intention is beginning to build up some steam and the focus is slowly but surely swinging toward that front burner. Long-term goals and plans are beginning to form which will eventually transform The Intention into a full-blown manifestation.
While Nanni and Salce are the core of the Intention, and indeed play a number of shows as a duo, they also add soloists and bassists to round out the combo to that of traditional instrumentations. The self-titled CD The Intention exhibits the many sub-styles of the jazz genre this group is capable of. We hope you'll enjoy the music. . .
