   About Mark Nelson
 Originaire de Calgary, Mark Nelson a commencé la batterie à l’âge de 15 ans avec Andy Ericson et Garry De Boeck. En 2003, il a obtenu son baccalauréat en interprétation du Jazz à l‘Université Massy en Nouvelle-Zélande. Sur l’île, Mark a enregistré et joué différents styles de musique dans beaucoup de situations. Notamment, il a participé au Festival International de Jazz de Wellington avec Charmaine Ford et Tryptych; il a été sélectionné pour jouer avec le National Youth Jazz Orchestra sous la direction de Bruce Paulson et à deux reprises, il a reçu la récompense « Ted Frickleton Most Outstanding Drummer » au Festival de Jazz de Manawatu. En 2004, Mark décida de continuer ses études de Jazz au Québec à l’Université McGill avec André White, Joe Sullivan et Kevin Dean. A Montréal, il a participé au Off du Festival de Jazz en 2006 avec The Responsibility Club. Le meme ans, il a accompagné la production de danse Industry of Dreams, chorégraphiée par Namchi Bazar et dirigée musicalement par Sage Reynolds. Mark a passé 3 hivers consécutifs en résidence au Banff Centre d’Arts (Alberta) avec son trio Fieldtrip. Sur place, le groupe a profité des conseils de musiciens renommés tels qu’ Andy Milne, Benoît Delbecq, David Braid, Steven Shick and Phil Dwyer. De plus, il a travaillé sur de nouvelles compositions en collaboration avec différentes formations musicales comme le Tin Alley String Quartet (Australia) et October Trio (Vancouver). Avec Fieldtrip, Mark est parti trois fois en tournée à travers le Canada. Le trio a été sélectionné pour participer à l’atelier Jazz et Musique Créative dirigé par Dave Douglas au Banff Centre d’ Arts en mai 2008. Pour le concert de clôture, le groupe a joué avec Dave Douglas, Ingrid Jensen et Ambrose Akinmusire. L’été 2008, Mark a participé à l’atelier international SIM (School for Improvisational Music) dirigé par Ralph Alessi à Brooklyn. Là, il a bénéficié de la rencontre avec d’incroyables musiciens tels que Jim Black, Tom Rainey, Tyshawn Sorrey, Drew Gress and Ben Street. Actuellement, Mark continue de jouer au sein de la communauté musicale de Montréal avec les groupes suivant: Juana e Trio Bruxo, Fieldtrip, With Krass, Parc X Trio, Tempus Fugit, et le Moondata Project. De plus, il a l’opportunité de jouer avec des musiciens locaux tels que Christine Jensen, Remi Bolduc, André Leroux, Alex Bellegarde, Chet Doxas, Miles Perkins, Sophie Tremblay, Ian Kelly, Jon Day, Matt Lipscome et Eric Hove. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Born in Calgary, Mark Nelson began drumming at age 15 under the direction of Andy Ericson and Garry De Boeck. In 2003, he received his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance from Massey University in New Zealand. He was also selected to perform in the National Youth Jazz Orchestra directed by Bruce Paulson. On two occasions he received the Ted Frickleton Most Outstanding Drummer award at the Manawatu Jazz festival. Mark has played and recorded extensively throughout New Zealand in various musical styles and settings including appearances at the Wellington International Jazz Festival with Charmaine Ford and Tryptych. In 2004 Mark furthered his Jazz studies at McGill University with Andre White, Joe Sullivan and Kevin Dean. He also appeared in the 2006 L’Off Festival de Jazz de Montreal with The Responsibility Club. That year Mark accompanied a dance production Industry of Dreams choreographed and created by Namchi Bazar, musically directed by Sage Reynolds. For 3 consecutive winters, Mark attended the Banff Centre for the Arts with the group Fieldtrip where new music was created and collaborations with visiting artists occurred including the Tin Alley String Quartet (Australia) and the October Trio. Also, musical direction for the group was received from Andy Milne, Benoit Delbec, David Braid, Steven Shick and Phil Dwyer. With Fieldtrip, Mark has participated in three Canadian tours. As well, the group was invited to participate in the Jazz and Creative Music workshop held at the Banff Centre for the Arts directed by Dave Douglas. During the final concert Mark shared the stage performing with Dave Douglas, Ingrid Jensen and Ambrose Akinmusire. Summer 2008, Mark attended the international workshop SIM (School for Improvisational Music) held in Brooklyn directed by Ralph Alessi. There, many great New York musicians including Jim Black, Tom Rainey, Tyshawn Sorrey, Drew Gress and Ben Street offered musical direction. Mark continues his involvement in the Montreal music scene, specifically with groups:, Juana e Trio Bruxo, Fieldtrip, With Krass, Parc X Trio, Tempus Fugit, and the Moondata Projects. Also he has had the opportunity to collaborate with many local musicians some of who include Christine Jensen, Remi Bolduc, Andre Leroux, Alex Bellgarde, Chet Doxas, Miles Perkins, Sophie Tremblay, Ian Kelly, Jon Day, Matt Lipscome and Eric Hove.
