Mark Rice hails from Weirton, West Virginia, a steel mill town in the heart of the Appalachian rust belt, and his music retains the intimate, communal tone of his childhood home. This self-taught singer/songwriter began playing his father’s fifty dollar Sears & Roebuck acoustic guitar as a teenager, and has been playing folk rock for audiences from Nashville to New York City.
As an artist, Rice establishes a firm connectedness between himself and the audience through stripped-down vocals and raw, earthy lyrics. He avoids cliché and strives to express the challenges of life in a relatable way. Fans enjoy the contemporary sound which recalls artists like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Coldplay. Thematically, Rice tackles universal concepts of doubt, faith, transience, mortality, human connection, and spirituality.
