Capitalist Globalization is no longer an evil threat, but a dark reality in the 21st century.
Multinational companies condition the consuming masses with lies, deception and manipulation in the forms of advertising tricks and fetishized logos.
These mega-corporations have infiltrated the world's governments, created legislation in their favor, and become global superpowers.
Today, this misappropriation of authority has dealt us states of international conflict, a plundering of nature and its resources, imbalances in the global economy, and a tangled web of disinformation.
MARK OF THE BEAST is a traveling art exhibit that serves as a conscious happening in each city it reaches, aimed directly at the issues of consumerism and alternative globalization.
Curated by Los Angeles-based artist Brandy Flower, the show exposes, in a tongue-in-cheek fashion, current issues of corporate manipulation in our society. The exhibit features more than 200 altered, yet recognizable logos of companies ranging from McDonald’s to Chevron, Gap to Mastercard, with each logo “spoof” depicting the corporation’s fundamental ills.
MARK OF THE BEAST launched in April 2005 to a crowd of more than 500 guests at the Transport Gallery in Downtown Los Angeles. As part of the one-night event, guests were encouraged to bring items of clothing to be silkscreened on-site for FREE, arming them with their own protest statements of the brazen, altered logos found in the exhibit.
On that night, without entering the gallery or viewing any of the art, the Los Angeles Police Department shut down the debut of MARK OF THE BEAST based on a single phone complaint that the work was offensive and aggressive.
This clear violation of First Amendment rights has been downplayed and virtually overlooked by all media sources.
MARK OF THE BEAST made its way to Mammoth Lakes in January 2006 and will return to Los Angeles this Fall. The 64-page catalog documenting the show's work and events is available on the website.
