No matter what age you are
Or what circumstance you find yourself in,
You have something unique to offer, that is your life, it is for who you are which has presents to share, inspire, create and expand.
Also Smile, not for others, but for yourself.

I photographed Noctilucent Clouds from Mount Tabor July 23, '09. A rare event that was reported by many across North America. Many images were seen in NASA's Spaceweather.com including mine. I then returned home to produce the large pastel sketch seen below on 19" X 25" black Strathmore Artagain pastel paper with use of various pastel chalks - c2009 Mark Seibold
I observed the crater Plato up close thorugh my largest telescope to produce this large pastel sketch including the half moon phase. The bottom landscape barrowing from the view of Plato above was made as an artists conception to commemorate the 40th anniversay of the first steps on the moon. 20" X 25" pastel on black Itlaian Fabriono Patel paper with rough tooth texture. c June 2009- Mark Seibold also see www.markseibold.com
I observed the crater Herschel at sunrise on the lunar surface, the terminator line where day and night meet, to produced this large pastel sketch 19" X 25" on black Strathmore Artagain pastel paper. c May 2009 -Mark Seibold also see www.markseibold.com
On April 22 2009 the Moon occulted the planet Venus, as I observed the event briefly but could not photoghraph it due to in and out of clouds. I returned home later to produce this large pastel sketch as seen from the west hills of Portland Oregon. A 19" X 25" pastel sketch on black Strathmore Artagain pastel paper with use of various pastel chalks. c April 22 2009 - The larger yet work below was produced prior to observing the event the day before for the NASA site Spaceweather.com It has been requested and commissiioned to use in the Astronomadas Club site in Spain by Leonor Fernando for the masthead of their site front page > http://www.astronomadas.com/

The above three pastel sketches of the Orion Nebula M 42 produced over two years on 9" X 12" black Strathmore Artagain pastel paper are respectively: 1.) from dark skies away from city lights, 2.) from suburban skies, and 3.) from inner city skies, all as observed though my 10.1" f/4.5 Newtonian telescope.
Above is a rough several steo progression as I worked on a large sketch of Saturn in pastels produced from outside through the telescope at 14 degrees F in late December
2008
The above large pastel was produced at home after observing the most photographed lunar planetary conjunction in history. I produced the sketch from memory after driving west in fog at sunset on a large east Portland boulevard. Venus and Jupiter above the crescent moon setting in a cold blue etheral fog. 19" X 25" pastel sketch - Mark Seibold * See entire gallery at www.markseibold.com

Instead of prime-time TV in the 1960's or only an occasional viewing of late night vintage movies as a youth, I fell into endorsing myself as a full fledged scientist at age 14 - *See photo inset above as my younger sister looks on - I was too busy observing the universe through my fiirst telescope that I purchased with my own early employment earnings and doing much of the preliminary artwork you see here - While many others my age whiled away their formative years soaking up brain-drain cathode-ray-tube-gawking. Finally, many have asked me where or what this location is - The 3 1/2 hour drive from Portland to approximately 50 miles east of Prineville into the Central Oregon 5,000 ft elev high desert of the Ochoco Mtns where approximately 700 other amateurs all congregate to sleep all day and stay up all night to observe through huge telescopes the wonders of the night sky, some optical instruments are as big as cars! My intense realism turns to surrealism- This may have been partly due to the instructor, Jay Backstrand and his art. This piece was one of many graphite representation studies as I entered Mt Hood Community College at age 18 immediately after high school. A crumpled brown paper bag. - Mark Seibold c1973
Another study, the instructor had us drawing the demanding image of eggs and eggs in a glass jar. Perhaps a week was spent on this image.
Mark Seibold c1973
In this final study I executed the entire image within 3 hours as copied from a photograph that I took in black and white of a water droplet on a branch, for the assignment in drawing from nature. Mark Seibold 1973

Then a Rauschenberg style transfer suggested by my father as I entered college art classes but not knowing who Rauschenberg was, I executed the same technique of solvent transfers of popular portraits to simulate a mock audience.

At the same time while in art school, I became enthralled with photography and as my father feared. . . Oh no, he's taking photography, he'll never pick up brush and paint again. He was right. The technology and the science of photography became a new art for me.

Aurora Borealis showing usual green glow at horizon, red vertical rays and royal blue random cutain overhead- 30 second exposure with 28mm wide angle lens from my backyard on the edge of town- 1989- Mark
Another night of intense red and green aurora. c1989 - An airplane transited the 30 second time exposure photo in my bad timing. - Imagine walking outside and looking to the northern sky one evening and seeing this! Many local people tell me they have never seen an aurora. This is because they are usually asleep late at night or watching a bright light in a box in the living room!

About me:

This pastel that I rendered on October 13th 2006 was the result after observing a large edge prominence event changing over an hour on the suns surface through my h-alpha solar telescope. Spaceweather.com published it to their front page for three days. I decided to allow it as an abstractive freeform work rather than a scientific documentation. My art still triumphs over my astronomy science. I prefer that science to be shared with the public as education. Enjoy the art for now. Contact me for availabe prints. I will lecture on this subject of astronomy related art and astrophotgraphy at Goldendale Observatory- November 11th 2006 7:30PM and 9PM. email at: markscosmiclight@yahoo.com *Mark your calendar and get to an h-alpha scope on November 8th, 2006!!! Mercury will transit the sun!!! See simulation here as a preview

Thunderstorm photographed from near my home in Troutdale OR - Looking east toward Mt Hood - Idea after Van Gogh's Cypress Trees and Road to Alyscamps - Spring c2006M.SeiboldGeorgia O'KeeffeQuotes: Marks on paper are free -- free speech -- press -- pictures all go together I suppose. I hate flowers -- I paint them because they're cheaper than models and they don't move. When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it's your world for the moment. I want to give that world to someone else. Most people in the city rush around so, they have no time to look at a flower. I want them to see it whether they want to or not. One can not be an American by going about saying that one is an American. It is necessary to feel America, like America, love America and then work. Where I was born and where and how I have lived is unimportant. It is what I have done with where I have been that should be of interest. - Georgia O'Keeffe

I am 'Left Handed - Right Brained', See what the common link is with the following: Artist/Scientist/Musician/Creative types- Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Einstein, Newton, Galileo, Isaac Newton, Michaelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Benjamin Franklin, Mark Twain, Thomas Jefferson, Richard Feynman, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, David Byrn, Paul Simon, Woody Allen, Picasso, MC Escher, etc, and etc. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * -
I have been the embodiment of oblique inuendo that I believe encourages a misinterpretation of what I am really attempting to do for my fellow man and woman. Find the reality of their own existentialism, whether that is possible for some or not to be. That is my ultimate question. Who are we; where did we come from and where are we going to? I know one thing for sure: We are all on this planet together.
I am not cut out for the communication that lacks hand gestures, facial expression, inflection of voice and linear correct grammer. Every attempt at wit I make, I feel is contrived and cliche. I can not transport my sense of humor onto a digital screen that is merely sterile matrix dots of electrons as opposed to real nature in the universe. Is that something that you have to learn?

Fear nothing. Do what you do best - Work hard at it with a passion - Follow your bliss and do not look at the clock! Time is the most elusive element in the universe. We are all born artists and scientists. Do not forget that. Everyone wants to do something creative whether they know it or not. Forget the judging of whether it is a good or bad piece of art - It is a process, not a product! > > > > > > > > As Miles Davis once said - Do not fear mistakes, there are none.
