About me: Athlete Biography:
Mark Triebwasser began mountain biking when he was just bout 13 years old. Previously he raced BMX for a couple years but only for fun. It was when he got his 1st mountain bike at the age of 13 he soon discovered a sport he began to develop a true passion for. As a teenager, Mark soon started to meet riding buddies which enabled him to ride in off-road territory all over northern California. Mark began riding a mountain bike on some of northern California’s roughest terrain.
___________________________________________________________
As his skills developed he began to enter local grassroots races in the beginner junior category. It wasn’t soon before he moved up to the junior sport category racing & winning races in Tahoe and abroad.
___________________________________________________________
In 1995 Mark picked up his first sponsor, Ventana Mountain Bikes. While working 2 jobs to pay his way for registration fees, travel expenses and bike gear, Mark was training with some of California’s best riders. Some of these riders were from Team FBW or now currently known as the Folsom Breakouts. It was in the same year that he was hitching rides to not just tahoe now to race, but to his 1st major race, Cactus Cup in Scottsdale Arizona. Racing for Ventana he placed top 10 in his age group. It was then he realized if he was going to win at these major races, he needed to incorporate some type of training program.
___________________________________________________________
After returning home from the race, Mark began to seek information bout starting his own training program. Into the next year Mark became stronger, more fit, and overall just faster.
___________________________________________________________
1996 couldn’t have come soon enough as it was when Mark traveled to Big Bear, California for the National Championship Race that Mark took 1st place in his class. As soon as he stepped off the podium it was when a coach named Jim Northy approached him. He was the coach for 1 of 2 of the only fully sponsored junior mountain bike teams on the national circuit. Jim offered Mark a spot on his team, which ironically was based in Auburn, Ca which was 20 minutes north of Mark’s hometown of Granite Bay. At the time the team was named Team Champion/Cytomax. Mark’s dream like every other racers dream finally came true. To win, get sponsored and race.
___________________________________________________________
From there Mark got professional guidance and coaching from being on the team. He also got biking gear and was given the opportunity to race at national races across the nation such as Mammoth Mountain, Park City, Downieville, Vermont, Michigan, & Georgia to name a few. With either 1st place victories or top 10 placement in all his races.
___________________________________________________________
While attending military school in Kansas, Jim was in touch with Mark’s track and field coach coordinating the right amount of training while Mark was in school. At each race he ran the 1 mile with his fastest time 5:06, 2 mile with his fastest 11:15, and 800 meter run and sometimes the 4x800 meter run. The Military School even contributed to his training by authorizing him to have a bike on a trainer in his barracks room.
___________________________________________________________
In 1997 Team Cytomax was renamed Marin Junior Team. The team was supposed to be the farm team so to speak for the Pro Marin Mountain Bike Team. During this change it was when Mark left the team to be coached and personally sponsored by the current national and world downhill champion, Leigh Donavan. During Mark’s last season of racing in 1997 he raced downhill. Taking top placement at Mammoth Mountain and being clocked at 53.4mph on his bike. He also took a few victories in some of Tahoe’s downhill race series.
___________________________________________________________
Then in 1998 after Mark graduated from High School he was off to college. After finding out that UC Davis at the time didn’t have a mountain bike team, he decided that his racing run was over.
___________________________________________________________
In May of 2006 Mark went and bought his 1st mountain bike since last time he rode back in 1998. He merely just wanted to ride again and just be outdoors for fun. As he looked for riding partners or groups to ride with, he heard of a group that rides every Tuesday night called the Folsom Breakouts. Upon showing up to the ride which had bout 40+ riders riding he was ready for his 1st group ride in over 8 years. Not knowing that that Folsom Breakouts was formerly called FBW, he immediately recognized 2 of the main leaders of the group that he used to travel with to races and train with as a junior. For not seeing these buddies in over 8 years, it was like a re-union of past friendships that had been lost to the tides of time.
___________________________________________________________
Mark began riding each week 1-2 days a week with his old buddies again and with the club. In spring of 2007 after doing the Party Pardee Century ride on his mountain bike with slicks he then realized how strong he had become again riding. It was almost like he never took 8 years off. After laughing at jokes his riding buddies were making about him making a comeback tour in racing, Mark began a self coached training program. He used what skills he had remembered from when he was a junior and trained with his only intent was to get fit and be fast. No racing goals where even in the picture.
___________________________________________________________
In August of 2007 Mark decided it was time get graduate from his hardtail with slicks and get a road bike. Its not like he needed one anyway, he was already kicking everyone’s butt who was on a road bike. Mark decided to purchase a triathlon bike off of craigs list. With no aspirations on ever doing a triathlon, he says he only bought that bike and was interested in those types of bikes because they look cool and they are different.
___________________________________________________________
Then as Mark was training on his TT bike, his riding buddies who race triathlons began to get him interested in making his cross over to the wet side as they put it. And on September 16, 2007, with never swimming 1 meter in his life and with never taking a swim lesson, Mark took 3rd place out of 8 racers in his class and 78th out of 174 racers. Not bad for his 1st triathlon and never swimming before. It was then he thought, if he could work on his swim and run a bit, he could be pretty good at this sport.
___________________________________________________________
At the end of September Mark traveled up to Tahoe to watch his friends race and work at the Xterra Triathlon. After watching closely every minute of the race all weekend long and studying on what xterra is all about, it was then Mark was sold on what he wanted to do. Race xterra in 2008.
___________________________________________________________
Then the worst happened. On Oct 2, 2007 while on a training ride going to meet up with a few triathlete riding buddies, Mark was tboned by a mini van traveling over 35mph. He spent 10 days in the trauma unit and suffered a punctured lung, broken ribs, fractured pelvis, sacrum, and reconstructive surgery on his elbow. Mark was told he would be in a wheelchair till thanksgiving and might be able to get back on the bike by end of December and could run & swim maybe in January sometime.
___________________________________________________________
After overcoming many difficult mental and physical obstacles he had never faced before in his entire life, Mark decided he would bounce back and bounce back stronger then before. Lance Armstrongs book, its not about the bike, had a lot to do with this decision along with all the support from his riding buddies and people in the local triathlon/cycling community.
___________________________________________________________
The 1st day back home, Mark jumped on his computer and emailed Quintana Roo informing them on what had happened. That his bike is totaled trying to seek a new one. And gracefully Quintana Roo replaced the bike with a new 2008 bike on a crash replacement deal while working with the local shop that Mark raced for, Bicycles Plus in Folsom, Ca.
___________________________________________________________
A week and a half after he was released from the hospital, Mark kicked the wheelchair out from underneath him after being told to remain non weight bearing for 8 weeks. On November 11th, Mark completed the clarksberg county 5k run in 41 minutes. 2 days later was Mark’s appointment with his doctor. Expecting to see him in a wheelchair, Mark’s doctor was not surprised to see him walking into the room. Mark states his doctor said, you damm athletes, I’m not surprised to see that you are walking. On November 13th, Mark was cleared to bike/run/swim with no restrictions and/or limitations. Mark was his doctors 1st patient ever he had cleared in less than 2 months with his injuries.
___________________________________________________________
It was then Mark decided to revisit his thoughts on xterra and begin his recovery training. He then set his goals, bounce back stronger then before, race xterra in 2008 and turn pro in 2009. With this mindset Mark began to overcome his injuries and pain and started to get back his fitness that he had before the accident. And on Thanksgiving Day, Mark entered the 5k Run for hungry and completed the run in 26 minutes. In just bout 2 weeks, Mark shaved over 15 minutes off of his last time.
___________________________________________________________
From there everything began to fall into place and kinda just happen for a reason as he states. From picking up a few more sponsors, training more overcoming tissue trauma pains, he finally set his 2008 race schedule with hopes to train efficiently, race, gain experience & more sponsors, make contacts, win and turn pro in 2009 to race the pro field of xterra.
