Mark Zaleski is a woodwind player from Boylston, MA. Specializing in the alto saxophone, he is also well versed in soprano sax, tenor sax, baritone sax, clarinet, bass clarinet, and flute. After leading a band called "The Eastern Jazz Project" made up of some of the best high school aged musicians Central Massachusetts had to offer, he left Boylston at age 18 to be one of six students to receive a fellowship to study at the Dave Brubeck Institute in Stockton, CA. There he performed throughout the country with jazz luminaries such as Robin Eubanks, Chris Brubeck, Christian McBride, Lesa Terry, Mic Gillette, and Dave Brubeck. After completing that program he moved back to Boston, MA to study with Jerry Bergonzi and Charile Banacos at the New England Conservatory of Muisc. There he formed a quintet that features his original compositions that had a residency at the Wonder Bar in Allston, and currently can be found regularly at the Good Life Bar in downtown Boston. While there he also had the opportunities to veer off unto the uncharted waters of the rock and roll music scene. For the past few weeks, Mark has been delighted to the be the only male member of the Playboy Mansion Chamber Orchestra for Ian Andersons Orchestral Jethro Tull tour. It is on this tour that he has been able to show his exemplary talents on the the clarinet and the other such dangly thing (Bass Clarinet), as well as showing off his improv and jazz chops on the sax both before and after the show. In fact, it is well known that Mark likes to practice for hours on end in grassy meadows in Pennsylvania and occassionally he will recruit the odd member of the Playboy Chamber Orchestra to improvise in the dressing room or backstage.
Mark's inspiration often stems from tinkering away in smokey barrooms on old uprights or rhodes keys. He would really like to thank all that have encouraged him throughout his life, especially the old man on the corner who bought him coffee the other morning after a sleepless night of editing tracks and watching Coffee and Cigarettes.
Be on the lookout for a collaboration with DJ Ray Mucci. They will play improvisational sets that feature electronic and hip-hop grooves accompanied by a live six piece band.
