GeneralFood, SCUBA, politics, government, foreign affairs, remembering that the previous three are distinct items, humor, music, theater, health, mental health, Jewish mysticism.
MusicI was in a jug band in college, and still love folk, bluegrass, blues, and ragtime roots music. I also loved the psychodelic folk rock of the 60s. Also jazz. Later on I learned some Latin percussion, and got into salsa, rumba, and Latin jazz. The only thing I actually turn off is classical music pre-1900, and not all of that. My favorite bands are Los Lobos, the Jefferson Airplane, Gateful Dead, and anything with Ruben Blades, whom I have met and interviewed several times. Through my son, Ben, I have listened to a fair amount of progressive rock and metal, and have actually enjoyed live performances by Dream Theatre and the Flower Kings.
MoviesWell, you can't go wrong with Romantic comedies. I do like a lot of old movies -- my favorite performer and director is Charlie Chaplin. I'll also see anything by John Sayles, Spike Lee, or Oliver Stone. I've seen "The Pawnbroker" nine times, and "The Loved One" about five times.
TelevisionI haven't been able to watch more than a few minutes of broadcast television since the late 1960s. Musta been the drugs. The only series that has caught my attention since then was "Queer Eye" for a few months. I loved early TV, and remember lots of early 50s stuff. I watch sports on TV, sometimes a little news or a movie on cable.
BooksI own more than 10,000 books, only about half being cookbooks. Reading is probably my daily and main hobby. I used to read all the new novels, then about ten years ago I got patient enough to read all the classics I couldn't sit still for in college: George Elliot, Jane Austin, Marlowe, Milton, Faulkner, Tale of Geni, Boswell's Life of Johnson. Bring 'em on. A guy in Peru named Willar Diaz once told me we all have one book we read over and over again, and mine is 1984. For a favorite living writer, I go back and forth between E.L. Doctorow and Phillip Roth. I also read some modern poetry still.
HeroesRuben Blades. Christopher Lasch. Ronnie Earl, my dad and my late Uncle Bill, Skip James, Gandhi, Maimonides, Heschel, Tunis Campbell (and all the abolitionists), U.S Rep. John Lewis (and anyone who was in the civil rights movement in the South).

About me:
I'm an author, writer, and editor in Boston, happily married for 30 years (I'm not here for dating). The title "Analog Man" comes from a humor column I wrote about 10 years ago for Inc. Technology. I'm actually pretty digital for an old guy who never actually a programmer. I was for a time chief editor of a large early .. community and Internet Service Provider, Delphi. I'm the author of The American Ethnic Cookbook for Students (www.ethnicook.com), and The American History Cookbook (www.historycook.com).

I've been very interested in networked communities for more than ten years before the opening of the commercial Internet in 1995, and as a journalist moved from investigative reporting and arts criticism to include what is now called "user generated content" from about ten years before that.

I am on the boards of two mental health organizations and try to be a mental health advocate.

Some people are Civil War buffs; I'm an abolitionism buff, and will read anything about Frederick Douglass, John Brown, and lesser known leaders like Tunis Campbell and Thomas Wentworth Higginson.

Who I'd like to meet:
  • Prospective employers, freelance anywhere, fulltime in Eastern Mass.
  • Old friends and co-workers.
  • People sharing my interests, especially in American ethnic groups and ethnic food, and food history.
  • People sharing my involvement with mental health issues.

I guess I found your profile... I don't understand something...how can people contact you & read your profile if you can't read profiles until you've been accepted into someone's network? Or maybe I've misunderstood the entire system. I have to go stir the chili...
Glad I found my way to your profile...
