Marla Leigh's music takes you on an ancient trance ~ percussive experience. Her music features percussive instruments from around the world, mixed with ethnic and western flutes, electronica ,voice and other wordly instruments. Marla has traveled around the world performing (with her ensemble and other groups)at festivals such as the Harmony Festival, Earth Day Festival, Los Angeles, Hawaii Healing Festival and the Luzerne Music Festival. She has played with world music artists such as Suzanne Sterling, Shimshai, Karnamrita Dasi, David Stringer and Hamsa Lila. She also organizes/teaches drumming retreats in beautiful places around the world.
Marla is currently working on her debut album, which will feature music from an upcoming journey to North Africa and the Middle East, to be released Spring 2009.
Marla has recently *Time Zone, an instructional DVD (with Ken Shorley) for Frame Drum and Darabuka and has also collaborated on various CD's. She also recently designed her own Signature series frame drum from Cooperman Co (available March 2008).
Marla plays Middle Eastern percussion (frame drum, riq), African percussion (Ghanaian style, Dgembe), Indian percussion (tabla, kanjira), unique hybrid world percussion "drumset ups", Western Flutes and other worldly flutes. She received a BFA and MFA from CalArts, and has studied with such percussion geniuses as Glen Velez, John Bergamo, Pandit Swapan Chadruhi, Ladzekpo brothers and Randy Gloss.
