Books(See myspace "Blogs" for my latest reads.... Jeez, i should have just done that to begin with. :)
Just finished: "Yakuza Moon" by Shoko Tendo. Crazy autobiography of a Yakuza's daughter. No glamor and sugar-coated fantasies in this book; only power struggles, rebellion, fear, abuse, addiction and an amazing loyalty to family at all costs. This book is shocking and will make you angry. I can only wish the best for this woman. What a life!
"Downtown Owl" by Check Klosterman. This was an easy read. A cast of crazy characters living life in a ridiculously small town. This reminded me a bit of the book I just read, "Buffalo Lockjaw", in that most of these characters are just a bunch of worthless idiots. The story comes together nicely but once it really gets going, the book ends. I was kinda ticked off that the story ended the way it did but it's kinda funny at the same time. This is the first Klosterman book I've read. I'm wondering if I would enjoy his non-fiction. Hmm...
"There are No Children Here" by Alex Kotlowitz. Darn good book about a family living life in the Chicago projects in the 80's. Man...this is another heavy hitting true story. Should be required reading for anyone who lives in Chicago, unless of course they've lived this themselves. Respect to everyone and their struggles.
"Buffalo Lockjaw" by Greg Ames. I picked this up as a promo at work. I was thinking it might not be so great but it was actually a pretty good read. It deals with a family gathered during the holidays. The mother has a serious degenerative brain condition and is being cared for in a home. The woman apparently used to be very outspoken and intelligent and had also become involved in right to die issues in her lifetime before her current state. Each family member struggles with this as well as 'coming home' as both of the children are now grown and had moved away years ago. This book is touching, suspenseful and even funny. Pretty good.
"China High: My Fast Times in The 010 - a Beijing Memoir" by ZZ. I found this book in the China History section, sure doesn't read like a 'history book'. I am kind of amazed this is a true story considering this guy's irresponsible lifestyle. Crazy insight into how things really work in China. I'm pretty sure this guy is saying something even bigger than I can comprehend with this book; I think I might have to learn more about China to figure it all out. Very interesting read. I wonder if there will be a sequel or if this guy starts some kind of a political movement?
"Listening Is an Act of Love" edited by Dave Isay. This is a nifty collection of short interviews done by a random cast of regular Americans by the Storycorps Project. Neat concept. It seems like everyone has at least one really amazing or moving story to tell. What's yours? I am really into non-fiction stories these days. Beautiful book. *Recommended!*
"Our America: Life and Death on the South Side of Chicago" by LeAlan Jones and Lloyd Newman, edited by Dave Isay. A customer had me find this book for her recently. I had no idea it was related to the book I was currently reading. Since it had to do with Chicago, I wanted to read it right away. I finished it before the other one. What a piece of work! It's so cool that this book is the result of words compiled from two very young interviewers who were living in the South Side projects. I hear stories like this all the time about how your friends and loved ones here in Chicago were raised in the middle of what was basically a war zone. Hell, it's still a war zone in Chicago. Metaphorically that's a powerful description but reading this book written by two children who were living in it daily, it's even more heartbreaking. These kids are smart, insightful and hopeful but still fearful since they know, especially in that environment, tomorrow is not promised. It's amazing to read secondhand as these kids run with the chance they are given and take this project as far they did. I guess I missed the NPR radio show with the live interviews and whatever TV companion was done but I caught up to the book. It's a great piece of work. *Recommended!*
"Passion on the Vine" by Sergio Esposito. The title sounded kinda cheesy so I couldn't bring myself to open the book for awhile. Now that I've gotten past that, it's a pretty great read about one man's love of his country's traditional cuisine. It spans the time from when he was very young up to his life now where things have changed in Italy. It's gets really interesting when he travels back to his country and visits specific regions and their vineyards and discusses how they are perceived vs. what their motivation is vs. where they stand in a traditional sense. If only I had a better memory for foreign names and the opportunity to go back to Italy soon, if only for just one fantastic meal or two!! :)
"Coraline" by Neil Gaiman. Not very different from the movie adaptation. I was surprised how close it was to the movie.
"Idiot Girls' Action-Adventure Club" by Laurie Notaro. Laugh-out-loud funny glad-you're-not-her stuff! For a good time (READ)THIS-BOOK.
"My Friend Leonard" by James Frey. Who knew there'd be a part two to his controversial first novel, "A Million Little Pieces"! It's cool to see these "characters" live on in their post-rehab state. Still living the crazy life.
"Heck: Where Bad Kids Go" by Dale Basye. One of the main characters is a rebellious young girl named Marlo so I had to check it out. Cute (if you think visions of kiddy hell can be cute, i do) and pretty punny, but ultimately fluff. I found it in the Young Adults section though so... :) Part Two is coming out in the fall. Maaaybe I'll take a peek to see what Marlo's up to next!

More stuff I read awhile back but won't erase yet: "A Mercy" and "Love" by Tony Morrison. I'll read anything of hers. Love her books.
"Ishmael" by Daniel Quinn. Wow, what a book! I should probably read it again even! But there's a part two and he has even more books! Hmm...
"Bright Shiny Morning" by James Frey. Agh! Be glad you are not these people! This makes me want to tell people to read this before following any Hollywood aspirations. It sure can be crazy in LA. Good book!
"Gang Leader for a Day" by Sudhir Venkatesh. What?! Gotta read it to believe it. This is a true story.
"Dear Diary" by Lesley Arfin. Entertaining in so many ways. I'm glad to say this wasn't anything like my childhood because it is ridiculously f'd up. The funny part is that this girl contacts old friends and enemies from as far back as 14 years ago to talk to them about the past. Fuggin hilarious! This book has attitude.
"House of Many Gods" by Kiana Davenport. Another masterpiece, I love this author. Hawaiian hardcore. Eye opening.
"Song of the Exile" by Kiana Davenport - Book of the century. Truly moving. Amazing storytelling.
"The Septembers of Shiraz" by Dalia Sofer. More foreign truths, this time in Iran. It's weird how a book can pull on your tear glands. The printed word is powerful stuff. Read it and let me know how you do.
"My Booty Novel" by Bill Campbell. Become his friend on myspace or facebook. He's a cool guy with good taste in music. The books not exactly a booty, booty novel. Funny and very familiar at the same time. Seriously, check it out.
HeroesRebels and revolutionaries. Real people.
