About me:
Early Years
From an early age, Barabin’s father instilled in him a strong work ethic, “Instead of playing catch, my father trained us how to work. Our family owned several rent homes, and he would bring my siblings and I along to do repairs, clean up, and help him with administrative tasks.” recounts Barabin.
Barabin is a product of the Houston Independent School District, having attended Garden Villas Elementarty, Hartman Middle School, and Westbury High School.
Military
As a son of a retired Army Master Sergeant, Barabin followed in his father’s footsteps, and on October 26, 1990 he enlisted in the 147th Fighter Wing of the United States Military. Barabin has served 2 tours in Iraq, first in 2005 and again in spring of this year.
“My experience overseas renewed my commitment to serving my neighbors back home and my understanding of the value of diplomacy and determination.¬¬”
Currently, Barabin is ranked Master Sergeant in the Texas Air National Guard and serves as his base’s Equal Employment Opportunity Counselor and Mediator.
Business
In 2001 Barabin founded New Community Mortgage. Located in Houston’s Third Ward, New Community Mortgage specializes in making home ownership more accessible to middle and low-income families. In 2004 Barabin, along with his partner, expanded his business venture with the formation of New Community Construction.
“As a businessman, I understand that it is important that ¬city government reach out and foster true equality of opportunity for MWBEs and emerging businesses. Additionally, businesses should support the communities in which they operate.”
New Community Construction put this concept into action in our efforts to support growth and reestablishment in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Community
Barabin is a board member of the Third Ward Redevelopment Council (TWRC). The TWRC has been instrumental in the construction of a new baseball park located in the heart of Third Ward. Barabin also serves as a board member in the Future Leaders of Young America Enrichment Program.
Barabin was elected President and CEO of the Houston’s Citizen’s Chamber of Commerce. Founded in 1935, HCCC is the oldest African American Chamber of Commerce in Houston. With a membership roll of over 3,000—it is also one of the largest in the nation.
Personal
Barabin is an avid movie collector, who enjoys playing tennis and listening to jazz.
