About me:
Feeling Down, Sad, Or Blue?
For the last three years,
major pharmaceutical companies
have been recruiting research subjects
off of Craigslist Los Angeles. They test new
anti-depressants by offering subjects money
in exchange for taking new combinations of drugs.
“How To Fake Clinical Depression” is the comedic story
of one man’s adventure in Big Pharma Hell.
Some Sample Reviews (Full Reviews Available in Blog):
From Mark Sterner at CityBeat (Cincinnati):
“You know you're into something good from the very first
moments of the performance of this work. Steven Marrocco
has a likeable, unassuming presence, like an old friend or your
favorite old hound. He is, however, completely in control of the
evening. His voice is resonant and expressive, a small tilt of
the head carries a subtle but provocative meaning and the entire
performance is crisply coordinated but still relaxed. Marrocco
stays in the same moment as the audience, which doesn't mind
eating from the palm of his hand.”
From Pamela Fisher at the Cincinnati Enquirer:
“A well-crafted tale… Marrocco slips in and out of the
characters populating his one-man play with ease….
The author does have a decided knack for dialogue and a
compelling story, which makes this one-man show worth
the ride.”
From Monday Magazine (Victoria, BC)
* * * *
"As an NYU graduate-cum-tanning-salon employee-cum anti-depressant research subject, Steven Marrocco’s show is slightly ridiculous, off-colour and over-the-top—exactly what many of us enjoy about the Fringe. Taking that extra step to include graphic images, theme songs and sound effects adds a lot to his one-man portrayal of his Italian goofball-popping family, a overly macho sexologist and the sexy research assistant who motivates Marrocco through his twisted trip to anti-depressant numbness and back. This character strikes that balance between pathetic and clever that allows us to guiltlessly laugh both with him and at him."
CBC Manitoba:
"It's worth seeing: there's some great writing that shines with lines that stay in your head long after the lights go down. To wit: "Cosmo Magazine... the most damaging thing to women's self-esteem since the Bible." Take that, Jesus! If you want some laughs and a wicked slap-bass solo, check it out."
From Jeff Bruener at the Des Moines Register:
“Funny, a pinch profane, and a true fringe experience not to be
missed.”
Quotes from KCStage.com:
"It's about time somebody made a statement about how Big Pharm tests and markets drugs. All too many people these days are taking some sort of anti-depressant. For some it's a lifesaver no doubt, but of course as a society we are feasting on a glut of chemicals without pausing to find out what is really being done to us.
Without being preachy, or beating a dead horse, Steven Marrocco, a Los Angeles actor and musician crafts a tight one-hour story that has a nice flow, with the help of Paul Stein, artistic director of the Comedy Central Stage in Los Angeles, and directed by Shulie Cowen, an alum of Second City Chicago. His personality is likable. An 'Everyman' type, he never goes over the top, or begs for laughs, instead chooses to earn our attention with honesty, and hysterical bursts of silliness.
This is a prime example of what a one-man show could and should be. Not too self-indulgent, but not pure fluff either. We can all relate to his desires, and his impressions of family. A well chosen timely topic presented with a nice flow, and a great beginning, middle and end."
"Hooray! An original non-fiction monologue that's not trying to be soul-exposing and revelatory!"
"This was one of the best-structured one-person shows I've seen."
"The show is fun and funny, and at the same time, makes some subtle political points about the warped pharmaceutical business and Americans' desire to tamp down normal human emotions, rather than actually experience them. The great thing about the points Marrocco makes is that he assumes his audience is intelligent enough to follow him, so does not feel the need to bash their brains in with the information. Nice."
"More theatre artists need to learn to take themselves less seriously, like Marrocco."
From London Fringe Press (Canada)
"If you are looking for a comedy where you can just sit, relax, and enjoy yourself, I would definitely recommend seeing "How To Fake Clinical Depression"
"A charming, funny and smart performance."
"Steven is extremely likeable and weaves a pretty nifty story! You can't help but enjoy yourself during this hour of funny characters and quirky incidents."
"Do go see this show!!"
From The Edmonton Journal:
"A clever takedown of the pharmaceutical industry, or a portrait of an America so anaesthetized by antidepressants and video games that it can't feel anything....Marrocco is a smart writer."
From See Magazine (Edmonton):
"Marrocco knows how to generate a laugh and puts his skills at characterization to good use."
From Vue Weekly (Edmonton):
"Marrocco paints a funny picture...the play is entertaining enough that it won't lull you into a catatonic state like a double dose of Prozac and Zyprexa."
