Born in Lisbon, Marta Hugon started singing classical repertoire in her teens. She soon became interested in jazz which led to classes with Norma Winstone, the Amsterdam Music Conservatory and the the Hot Club Jazz school where she studied and met the musicians who are now the members of her quartet. Since then Marta Hugon has performed in many jazz festival and clubs and is currently teaching at the Hot Clube School.
Her quartet, formed by Filipe Melo on piano, Bernardo Moreira on bass and André Sousa Machado on drums, recorded its first album Tender Trap in 2005, which had excellent reviews.
Story Teller, her new CD, has been released in April 2008 and combines an eclectic repertoire with beautiful arrangements and a consistent band work which results in an album acclaimed both by the critics and the public.
Musicians like the guitar players André Fernandes and Bruno Santos or the trumpet player João Moreira are guests in both releases.
Marta Hugon has enjoyed singing with many different musicians such as Pedro Moreira, Mário Delgado, Yuri Daniel, Bruno Pedroso, Damien Cabaud, Afonso Pais, Lynne Arriale, Klaus Nymark Big Band, Marco Franco, Paulo Gomes, João Lencastre, Kiko, Rui Caetano and others.
She is also a guest in André Fernandes’ project Spill, stars in A. Shrimp/Alexandre Camarão’s electronic music project and is currently touring her "Story Teller" across the country.
«A fully talented singer - a revelation to our ears. (...) Listening to her album reinstates a sort of freshness and self-confidence which are not common among young singers. (...) She has got both melodic imagination and impeccable swing.»
Raul Vaz Bernando in Expresso (reference weekly newspaper) 15-08-08
«Marta Hugon’s latest album is marvelous. (…) Better yet: it is an unusual selection of songs, all inspiring and beautifully orchestrated by Filipe Melo. Much is to blame to Marta Hugon’s special way of bringing words into life. Throughout her performance, one immediately realizes an enormous pleasure in singing. Such is the music of storytelling.»
Bernardo Sassetti, 2008
«From a strictly musical point of view, what strikes out is Marta Hugon’s remarkable maturity – she controls and grades at entire ease the various vocal mechanisms, according to each song, thus conferring them a strong personal character. (...) She particularly values a perfect tuning, her diction and the timbre nuances in her voice, thus enhancing her intense performance. (…) This album will naturally play an important role within contemporary Portuguese jazz.»
Manuel Jorge Veloso, 2008
«An extremely beautiful voice and three excellent musicians; a repertoire which is not confined to classics - yet does not avoid them - with inspired and very well performed arrangements; all adds up to a bonding, intimate relationship with the listener.
Music is shared among singer and players, and it is also shared with us.»
