Influences
BACKGROUND OF CAFÉ AMAN
In the late 90’s, Martha began to create a classical urban mix of music , with colourful Eastern modes , fusing the contemporary cosmopolitan influences of her upbringing in London , with Rembetika , the music of the Greek refugees from Asia Minor. [Rembetika music is the music of Martha’s parent culture and features strongly in her upbringing].
Martha created the project Café Aman following her passion for vocal based instrumental music , world music and Classical music and to perform her compositions , in which she sings and plays percussion and guitar.
Café Aman began with an Arts Council commission in 1999. This commissioned work instantly received wide acclaim after a broadcast of the entire concert by BBC Radio 3.
Café Aman went on to accumulate numerous performance credits at venue and festivals such as Jazz Cafe London : BBC World Music Festival Nottingham : Bracknell Summer World Music Festival , : Bristol Hope Centre : Pheonix Theatre Exeter : Brighton Komedia : Cargo Jazz Festival : London Jazz Festival : Chard Festival Somerset : Purcell Room London : Queen Elizabeth Hall South Bank London : Brighton Festival : May Fest : Chichester World Music Festival : City of London Festival : Croydon World Music Festival : Cabot Hall Canary Wharf London.

REVIEWS OF CAFE AMAN 'LIVE'“Lewis' unique crossover style , trademark passionate, sonorous vocals and haunting melodies lie on a bed of sonic Mediterranean beats” BBC Radio
"Far from just another chunk of culture -hopping opportunism, Cafe Aman is a unique cultural crossover driven by a charismatic leader. A distinctly live wire of musical independence Cafe Aman is Lewis’ s first solo venture and the biggest show she has so far connected her formidable voice to....Lewis has a yearning upturn to her voice to go with its majestic and clamourous power..
The music of Café Aman is as much about changing London as it is about Mediterranean roots, it burns a volatile fuel of European folk music, modern Technology , pop influences and jazz Improvisation. Cafe Aman is going places”. John Fordham The Guardian.
“Martha Lewis' Cafe Aman project marries the urban blues of the cafes of Athens in the 1920s with urban London. Martha grew up in London and her dance-friendly world music, takes in tango, classical music and Greek rhythms. The instrumentation of her band provide a nostalgic and lyrical background to her striking vocal lead.” Stephen Graham Jazz Mag
