"It takes about ten years to make a mature dancer. The training is twofold. First comes the study and practice of the craft which is the school where you are working in order to strengthen the muscular structure of the body. The Body is shaped, disciplined, honored, and in time, trusted. The movement becomes clean, precise, eloquent, truthful. Movement never lies. It is a barometer telling the state of the soul's weather to all who can read it. This might be called the law of the dancer's life - the law which governs its outer aspects."

GRAHAM II
• Virginie Mécène, Graham II Director
The Martha Graham Ensemble was founded in 1983 by Yuriko at the request of Martha Graham. Today, under the direction of Virginie Mecene since 2007, it is renamed as Graham II. Its mission is to bring fresh energy, passion and forward vision to the brilliant tradition of Martha Graham. As the New York Times noted, "...these fresh young performers bring to this distinctive style a welcome boldness and clarity."
Composed of up to 12 dancers, Graham II is the performing group of the Martha Graham School. The dancers have been selected from among the hundreds of students from across the world who study at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance. Members are chosen by audition and are funded by scholarships. While a member of Graham II, dancers may be given the opportunity to apprentice with the Martha Graham Dance Company.
The dance troupe performs Martha Graham's repertory and the works of others choreographers within the Graham tradition and is highly committed to its arts outreach programs which are conducted all year long throughout the public school system in all five boroughs of New York.
Please contact the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance for information about booking.
