I made my first bass guitar at the age of 14. In my mind this was the ideal choice. It was a simple instrument with just 4 strings and it would be simple to do it. What a big misunderstanding to think that an instrument with 4 cords would be easier to make than one with 6…
Anyway, I badly wanted a guitar but my parents could not afford to buy me one. I decided to make a model which I liked a lot, the one I had seen on the cover of a record of the Shadows. This would be the one! Great look and incredible sound!
In 1965 it was not easy to produce a handmade bass and it was even more difficult to get any components.
So I went to the local carpenter at the end of the road where I lived. He cut out a piece of oak according to my drawing – my bass! I just had to do some work on the finish and get the accessories. I even found everything I needed after a long research except for the special bass mike so I helped myself with an ordinary acoustic microphone – one of those you fix in the rosette. It would do the job.
Well I knew nothing at that time and I had no idea neither about the diapason (it did not have any keys) nor the marks (repères???) or even the frets but it had a bass sound (on a little 7 watt amplifier and I walked on air!! It was – without knowing my first fretless…
It is more than 45 years ago since then, in the meanwhile I had began my career in the Paris fire brigade and my hobby was model making. This gave me a lot of additional experience in working with wood.
But making instruments has always been my passion til now as I have retired. I put all my efforts and my experience which I collected during the past years. I kept on with making basses, this wonderful instrument which people are more and more rediscovering nowadays.

J'ai fait ma première Basse à l'âge de 14 ans, pour moi c'était l'instrument simple au possible!!! il y avait 4 cordes, et je pensais que je n'allais pas trop me prendre le tête....Mais ce fut une grande erreur, ceux qui peuvent penser que 4 cordes c'est plus facile que 6, se trompent bien ...
Bref!! J’avais envie d'une guitare depuis longtemps, et mes parents n'ayant pas trop de moyens, n'ont jamais pu me payer ne serait ce qu'une acoustique .
Je décidai donc suite à un modèle qui me plaisait bien, vu sur une pochette de disque des Shadow's, de faire ma propre guitare, et ce serait donc une Basse, notamment pour le son qu'elle faisait ..
En 1965, faire sa propre Basse n'était pas facile, quant à trouver des pièces (accastillage) encore moins ..
Je suis allé chez mon menuisier au coin de la rue; d'après mon dessin, il me découpa en une pièce et dans du chêne, ma Basse .
Il ne me restait plus qu'à peaufiner ce bois pour en faire un instrument et trouver les accessoires .
Je trouvai tout ce qu'il fallait, après de nombreuses recherches, sauf le micro spécial Basse, et j'achetai donc un micro d'acoustique, un de ceux qui se montent dans la rosace (il ferait bien l'affaire).
Autant vous dire que je n'y connaissais rien, et que rien ne fut respecté, ni le diapason, il n'y avait pas de touche, ni les repères, et encore moins de frettes, mais elle avait un son de Basse (sur un petit ampli de 7 Watts)et j'étais donc aux anges !!! Ce fut sans le savoir ma première fretless ..
Il y a plus de 45 ans de cela, entre temps je suis rentré aux Pompiers de Paris, où j'y ai fait carrière, et mon passe temps était le modélisme .
Faire des instruments cela m'est resté toute ma vie, aujourd'hui je suis à la retraite, et je me donne à cette passion, (parmi tant d'autres) en tant qu'amateur, avec les connaissances que j'ai acquises au fil des années...J'ai pu me faire des instruments dont je rêvais ..
