About Martin Martini & The Bone Palace Orchestra

Photobucket

Martin Martini doesn’t really trust humans – he prefers animals and chess.

"I love a game where a horse can eat a bishop. There should be more of that. I love a game where a queen takes pawn. I think all queens should take a bit of pawn. The world would be a much better place if there was just a little more pawn…".

His unconventional approach to life mirrors itself in his music. Nobody explained to him that you couldn’t make an orchestra with just a few freakishly talented misfits playing clarinet, trombone, guitar, bass, drums and keys. So in defiance he formed the Bone Palace Orchestra; fusing grooves of jazz, blues, and matchless show-tunes; with good old fashioned rock’n’roll. But Martini is uncomfortable with being reduced to such labels: ‘If you tell people you’re gypsy rock, they expect gypsy rock.’ So Martini avoids such expectations and seeks to keep his critics guessing. Indeed, such a reductive term fails to capture the gist of music that makes you want to dance, cry, laugh and yell in equal measures.

Martin Martini & The Bone Palace Orchestra’s second foray into the studio, We’re All Just Monkeys 2008, marks a progression; a real maturity and tightness in their work. Musically they have traded some of their chaos for depth but sacrificed none of their subversion. From a love story between a monkey and a sardine (Monkey and Sardine) to a song that Eddie Perfect has described as the kind of song you’d slow dance to at the wedding of a couple you just know aren’t going to make it (Knife), Martini’s music forces you to really listen rather than just let you take it in passively like a passenger. And like Goerge Orwell, the man he quotes in the liner notes of the album, he refuses to just sit down and shut up. Such an irreverent approach is bound to alienate people. But then, he never did want to waste his life being one of those men that just fitted in. When asked whether his brash, passionate, and at times obnoxious style might offend people, and whether this bothers him, he simply smiles his big serial-killer smile and says: ‘we’re all just monkeys…’

Martin Martini & The Bone Palace Orchestra Disband in August 2009.

‘Categories can go hang! Martini has a winning way!’
The Evening Standard, London

‘There's nothing like Martin Martini out there right now - he is his own genre - and it's about time the rest of the world caught on. A truly frightening genius is at work here.’
Beat Magazine

‘Here's mongrel music - my favourite kind- from Martini and his merry misfits. Playful, angry and perverse.’
Paul Kelly

‘Fat Vaudevillian Rock n Roll….. Expect to be seduced and appalled in equal measure.’
The Age

‘The most original band of this or any era, while they could be from anytime in history one thing is certain. They are not from this dimension. 5 stars.’
Triple J Radio

It's going to be a monster four band pile up on highway 666 as Vultures of Venus crash into the Birmingham on Thursday the 3rd of Dec. Their debut LP which is now available through I-Tunes has been receiving strong support and favorable reviews from local radio RRR, PBS and Syn Fm. It will also be available in hard copy on the night. This gig is gonna be fun, fun, fun on the Smith st autobahn. Armed with big rock riffs and blazing electrified keys this is the Vultures first show since their sellout LP Launch. This is a band with a plan; and that plan is to make you do the Can Can.
Joining them on the night is Mirrorhouse Antics whos live show is a cross between the Arctic Monkeys and The Stooges. They have just released their debut album, recorded at Bakehouse by Mikey from Eddie Current Suppression Ring. Dan Webb's 60's styled Hammond infused insanity is gonna be something to look out for as well as the 'Wise Flys' : they'll make you laugh they'll make you cry, they'll make you laugh about crying.
And don't forget to look out for the crazy clown pinyada filled with burning flesh and give away fun toys for the kids. This is a B.Y.O "leotard friendly event ". So pour yourself into your favorite and come on down !!!

FRIZZ RECORDS

FRIZZ RECORDS

Sep 26 2009 8:50 AM

FRIZZ RECORDS is proud to announce our first official LP release...

"It's Not The Wand, It's The Magic" is the debut release from AUGUST, the London based band centred around the songwriting partnership between vocalist VEDINA MOSE and multi-instrumentalist / producer RAPHAEL MANN (MR HUDSON / JOY JOSEPH / ART TERRY), with master drummer CLEAN CUT MARK and clarinetist / vocalist MAREE CHOIE completing the core line-up, and a supporting cast including ART TERRY (keyboards), SHOHEI KAWAMOTO (AKA Japanese producer Baraki, Bass clarinet, soprano sax and flute), and KAI HOFFMAN (French horn)

Always an act that juggled a diverse set of influences, the album has been compared to artists as diverse as KATE BUSH, PRINCE, DE LA SOUL, SLY STONE, MADLIB, SERGE GAINSBOURG and THE DELFONICS, for its concoction of wild experimentation and traditional song craft, organic production and futuristic electronic touches, funk bass & drums and jazz & orchestral references, infectious melodies and lyrical flights of fancy...with nods towards classic soul, JB funk, Studio One, 60s pop, psychedelia, left field hip hop, new wave, doo wop, tropicalia, high life, & avant garde jazz, without any song ever fitting squarely into any of those categories...new music, basically...and an instant classic!

"It's Not The Wand, It's The Magic" can be downloaded now from the iTunes Store (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=319268431&s=143443)

The album is also available on heavyweight vinyl LP in a sumptuous gatefold sleeve, or on Digipack CD from the FRIZZ online shop (http://www.frizzrecords.com/?page_id=5&category=20) & all good retailers

Be prepared for a night of exciting tunes, outrageous tempos, amazing playing and flashy dressing when The Woohoo Revue appear at Open Studio as part of the Darebin Music Feast on Saturday 5 September. The show starts at 8pm, admission is $10. The band's last Open Studio show was one very raucous night indeed. This should be a very sweaty one.
