When I fist met Bobcat Smith he was wondering along Shoal Creek. He was searching for new ideas. I could see great potential in him, so I shared with him my latest invention, the atlatl. I instructed him to climb Mount Bennell and find the strongest, yet most flexible piece of bamboo the length of his arm. He returned sunburned and half-starved, but he had obtained the perfect atlatl. Fortunately he learned quickly and we were able to feed ourselves during the dry season by hunting the boat-tailed grackle. Then one day while attempting to spear a carp I was attacked by the great Jaguar, the largest and most powerful cat in the Americas. Fortunately for me, Smith was at the ready and he threw a fishing spear at the ferocious beast, striking it in the shoulder muscle. That cat released me from its grip and turned on Smith. Due to my injuries I could only watch as the animal reached Smith in one bound and knocked him on his back. The screams I heard sounded like demons in Hell. Abruptly everything stopped and there was dead silence. Both man and beast lay still. Slowly Smith began to stand, still holding a bloody spear tip in his hand. He had managed to push the spear through the shoulder and into the cats heart. When he pulled it out, the massive damage to the cats heart caused it to quickly die. To this day the Mountain Lions and Jaguars can sense that Smith has fought one of their own and survived. They fear him.
