yoko kanno, gian slater, barney mcall, herbie hancock, shiina ringo, björk, joe hisaishi, christian wallumrød. my dad.
i also find inspiration in osamu tezuka's works, and films by shunji iwai and takeshi kitano.
a little bit about the songs here: Some Things Always Change - a piece I wrote for a music styles assignment back in 2008. my dad is on drums. there's a few worthy displays of performance anxiety affecting my playing in this recording.
When Sunny Gets Blue - a standard, one of my favourite ballads, arranged for my VCA small ensemble. tom noonan on alto sax, shannon busch on vocals, alistair robertson on bass.
Blue Monk - another arrangement of a standard for VCA small ensemble, lineup as above. with this one we modulated up a third or so now and then. at the end, we all play in different keys at the same time.
Alfie - an 'orchestral' arrangement I worked on for my first year recital, it turned out quite well. georgie darvidis on vocals, steve hornby on bass.
Karaboudjan - an original I wrote to play in my first year recital. essentially it's based on superimposing different minor pentatonic scales over a C-sharp minor vamp. in 5/4. i named it after the Armenian cargo liner in the Tintin installment "The Crab With The Golden Claws". tom noonan on alto sax, audrey boyle on trumpet, steve hornby on bass, my dad on drums.
Jim clip - a short 20 second clip i smashed together a while ago for a friend. he was making a cd of about 100 tracks of about 20-30 seconds length, featuring many esteemed artists in the tracks. i decided to contribute.
Watashitachi - I wrote this song for a band of the same name that was formed this year. we played a set of originals at 303 in Northcote to wide acclaim, so hopefully we'll get together soon. natasha rose on guitar, andy szentandrassy on tenor sax, leonardo caltabiano on double bass, jordan scotney on drums.
haha yeah, Ben is indeed my brother. that rubys night was quite an interesting one... even courtney didnt notice who i was when she was talking to me. pretty amusing. ahh well went off to mater christi for high school, did a year of uni at swinburne (where i met Shaun the most amazing bassist). now im with open universities studying behavioural science. being in two bands and working has pretty much sucked my time up. studying online is the way to goooo.
