I started playing the guitar at the age of 15. My early influences include Clapton & bands ranging from Huey Lewis to Bon Jovi and Kiss. My more recent influences have ranged from Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert and Jennifer Battern to Flamenco guitar, John Williams, Albert Lee etc.
I practiced daily for at least 6 hours. I joined my first group at 18 years old and played a few pub gigs doing cover tunes. I then started teaching after 3 years - whilst also developing my own skill playing in various local bands. I then joined newly-forming group "Goodfellas" and played with top quality guys for 5 years or so. During this time with "The Fellas" I formed a duo with the vocalist and played acoustic covers in various styles.
I also formed "Raptor" an instrumental trio playing originals and covers by greats like Vai, Satch etc. "Heat" saw me in another trio, this time a hard rock cover band.
After taking singing lessons, I began performing solo gigs on an acoustic guitar, also playing at various functions with a classical guitar. In 1996/97 I entered the "National Guitarist of the Year" competition run by "Guitarist" magazine (electric guitar). I reached the final six and played an original entry piece "Big Brother" at the Wembley Conference Centre at the National Music Show.
In 1998/99 I entered the "Acoustic Guitarist of the Year" competition and again reached the final 6 and played at the show. Although I didn't win I was told that no one had ever reached finals of both categories and that it showed versatility. I am now pursuing a better career in music whilst writing my own material.
My solo gigs have evolved so that I am now playing a broad mixture of songs from the 50’s to present. I am using both acoustic and electric guitars, and perform for some songs to backing tracks to give a "full band" sound.
I am now living in Glasgow, with lots of great students and some great venues that I play regularly. I travel all over the country to play either songs or solo guitar.
I am currently looking for like minded musicians to form a serious group playing originals, either instrumental or vocal or both.

Hi Martyn - just letting you know that I still pop on here from time to time to listen to your brrrrrilliance. I was hoping you could pop down to Ayrshire at some point and show some of the members of the Guitar Club at the school what a bit of practice could do, but time got away from me! Hope you're thriving pal. Let us know how things are.
