Who I'd like to meet:
A VESTED INTEREST THE QUEENSLAND CAKE DECORATORS ASSOCIATION One day while I was stopped in traffic I looked out the window. I saw a Sign outside a community hall that gave times for the QLD Cake Decorator’s monthly branch meetings. My imagination ran wild for a time. I considered benches filled with elaborate shiny cakes and their owners standing proudly beside them talking about the month that was. I contacted the Association to gauge a feel for what the group might really be like. I learnt of the Mt Coot-tha festival, a highly anticipated event on the Cake decorating calendar. Last year 95 entries had been submitted from all over the state in categories ranging from novelty to contemporary wedding. The festivals theme was QLD tourism and the overall competition winner was a cake depicting the QLD state being lapped by waves to the east while featuring outback properties inland. I was curious. The following year I decided to charter the progress of 3 contestants and their cakes toward the 2007 Mt Coot-tha festival. This is what happened.
'The People who Dance at RSL Clubs' One morning I walked into a Brisbane RSL Club and had a seat. A crowd of people had turned out for a raffle and morning of light entertainment. The morning ran its course. Ticket numbers were called and bistro vouchers collected by the winners. After some time there was a musical interlude. An elderly couple appeared on the floor and began a slow waltz. I found this amusing. Gradually the couple introduced regular spins and their movements became more pronounced. Their faces beamed as they smiled and chatted easily to one another. Some time later, two mature ladies approached the floor and began to line dance, turning around from time to time and clapping their hands. This scene began to interest me. It hadn't occurred to me before that in this way(dancing at suburban RSL Clubs), people were having the time of their lives. I was curious and pleased that such a scenario had unfolded. I decided to visit other RSL clubs and such venues to investigate this phenomenon. Several weeks later I began this photo series. ‘The People Who Dance at RSL Clubs’
‘I Saw You’ ‘I Saw You’ is a series of images that celebrate the human face. The photographs are taken of faces I've come to know well and cover a spectrum of background, age and nationality. Faces are molded by our biological past as well as our mental and emotional dealings with the world. The series invites the viewer to consider the circumstances or life paths that bought about these faces and what kind of mind, heart and life could lie beneath them. This series of photographs show uninhibited, unapologetic expression and allow the viewer an insight into the subjects inner world, offering a pure glimpse of the person they are. The portraits celebrate the face's complexity and simplicity. ‘I Saw You’ demonstrates that the human face is always interesting and beautiful, even if it is the face of a stranger.

'Flight Path' One day the QLD Kite Flyers Society were having a gathering. I stoped to watch the flying. I met some members who happened to make kites themselves. I thought it would be good to document the creation of a kite in stages toward its first flight. This series shows a kite Mr David Bawtree recently crafted and flew for the first time on the weekend Oct 28th.
