Born out of the ashes of Bodybag, Maruka is a band difficult to describe. They are not punk, metal, industrial, death, black metal, hardcore, prog, or rock, yet they seem to have similarities with each and every one of those styles. The cello and percussions combined with dark, heavy, melodic riffing and gutural, hardcore and gothic vocals gives a tribal, wicca ritual kind of mood. The montréal local cultural paper (LE VOIR) said it best when Maruka won a local music contest: "Maruka is an intense acid trip potion delivered by a modern urban witch". The founding members are Danielle Hubbard and Daniel "dunn" Hétu who used to play in the tribal hardcore grind act Bodybag. It was in october 2003 (feeling that Bodybag was coming to an end) that both of them decided to form a more experimental band that would still have the hardcore and grind edge of Bodybag but with other more trippie and accesible styles. They made their first gig in december 2003 in Bertrand Boisvert (Flokons Givrés, Dr. Placebo)'s loft with Boisvert as lead singer and other musicians. In the last 3 years, the band played a lot in Montréal (especially at the Café Chaos), and started slowly to build themselves a small fan base. They are currently working on recording a demo, due as soon as they can!
