Marv hangs out with a whole array of colorful and noisy characters:
In the fall of 2009, Marv joined Denim n' Lace, a kickin' rock country group based in Harford County, MD. Hear more at http://www.myspace.com/denimnlace777 and learn more at http://www.denimnlace.net .
To keep his chops up, he is a member of the Baltimore Guitarist Group http://www.baltimoreguitaristgroup.com/ and performs at open mics and jams in the Baltimore Metro area and Harford County.
On various perverse occasions, there's Wee-R-FUBAR:
Marv Egolf- bass, vocals, lyrics, production, promotion
Bux Deacon- vocals, schmooze, El Voco Grande, harmonica
Zade P. Greene- vocals, lyrics, charisma, cerebration, autoharp & rain stick
There's the posse at Thuh SwitchingYard, the arts/media arm of LGM Enterprises, where Marv's solo project UXO is underway sporadically.
As well as Beerdz Hill Rode:
Jack Fox- guitars and vocals
Larry Williams- guitars and vocals
Stan Hall- drums
Influences
PEOPLE WHO DON'T GIVE UP, NO MATTER WHAT, NO MATTER HOW LONG Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Delbert McClinton, Robert Gordon, Hank Williams, Nils Logren & Grin, Doug Ling, Jim Boltralik, Tom Langan, Steve Henderson, Bud Fairlamb, Eva Cassidy, Warren Zevon, Neil Young, Kevin Gilbert, Jimmy Gilmour, Rolling Stones, John Doe, Emmylou Harris, Grateful Dead, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters, BB King, The Nighthawks, anything and everything by The Band collectively and separately, Bob Dylan, David Byrne, Bruce Springsteen, Bruce Cockburn, Michael Hedges, Jimmy Briscoe
Sounds Like
Johnny Cash, Robert Gordon, John Doe, Levon Helm, Robbie Robertson, Tim Curry, and sometimes that guy from Crash Test Dummies, basically manly tones although there was a time I could handle Smokey and Eddie Kendricks, some real men.
THE MARV EGOLF GEAR: 2006 Fender Precision Hot Shot Electric Bass, 1988 Guild B-30 Acoustic Bass Guitar, 1970 Gibson EB-3 Electric Bass, 1967 Norman Violin Bass, 1970 Acoustic 136 Bass Amp, 1995 Fender Bass Amp, a vibroslap, some harmonicas, a Yamaha electronic keyboard, a Knight English pub piano refurbished by Michael Vecchione, a Hammond M18, and a lava lamp. Can't remember what happened to the black light and those Hendrix day-glo posters....
THE BOSS!!!!
MARVelous' BACKGROUND: Serendipity- Being born to an aspiring songwriter mother and a father who lost his chance to pitch for the Baltimore Orioles due to a drunken brawl and a fall down some stairs. Frolicking and skulking in the hills and dales of Sykesville. Genesis- Riding in the back seat of his father's Ford cruising the countryside of Carroll County, MD, Marv Egolf was laying in the back seat gazing at the stars when "Hound Dog" by Elvis Presley came on the radio. Like cosmic ray exposure, that rock & roll event altered Marv's DNA. Of course, Little Richard sealed Marv's fate. And Hank formed his soul. Nurturance- During his youth in North Carolina, he spent hours listening to his grandmother sing Hank Williams tunes. "Hey, Good Lookin'" was a favorite when she was cooking. In the bosom of the South, true country music washed over him saturating his soul. Heritage- Embracing his Cherokee as he resolved his own trail of tears from Sykesville to Edgewater to Evergreen and Chadbourn to Baltimore and beyond. Thirst- When his mother returned from Texas to retrieve him from tarheel country and take him to the new world of Baltimore, MD, he got his first transistor radio and spent time sitting near telephone poles or metal towers to improve his reception so he could hear favorites like "Sugar Shack" by Jimmy Gilmour & The Fireballs. Late at night on Sundays, he could get WCFL from Chicago and listen to the Billy Graham crusades. Enlightenment- A huge turning point was the T.A.M.I Show, a movie that played at the Grand Theatre on Conkling Street. Marv watched that movie six times in a row and was mesmerized by the Rolling Stones and James Brown. THE T.A.M.I. SHOW 1964/1965 was a black & white U.S. film hosted by Jan and Dean and produced by Jack Neitzche. It featured Chuck Berry, James Brown, the Rolling Stones, the Supremes, Gerry and The Pacemakers, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Marvin Gaye with the Blossoms, Lesley Gore, Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, the Barbarians, the Beach Boys and others. Teenage Terri Garr was a go-go dancer. Eureka- The clincher came when he was 15, hanging out with his CYO chums one night, and Bobby Caperna mentioned that his band needed a singer. Marv chimed in, "I can do that." Shortly thereafter, Marv auditioned literally in a hole that was dug out from under a house near Fort Holabird in Baltimore; and he was welcomed into The Decades as the new vocalist performing Motown, Stax-Volt, and R&B favorites. The Decades was a ten piece band featuring a horn section, and they played teen centers, CYOs, military bases (Officers' Clubs, Enlisted Clubs), USOs, and school concerts. All members were white so blue eyed soul was what folks called it. The band was so good they had to be given a police escort to leave a club near North Avenue because the black audience was upset by these white boys doing it so well.
