Marvel make blisteringly exciting dance music. Fusing the attitude of Refused to the unhinged performance spirit of At The Drive-in, Marvel stage an apocalyptic barbershop dance party for the 2010’s. They sing: “you can’t have heard a sound like this before”. You better believe it.
Using abrasive guitars and dirty industrial synths, Marvel create massive, full-pelt dance punk anthems. They are just as likely to insight a mass sing-along, as they are to start a riot. Big choruses brimming with heart balance their unstoppable freight train riffing. It takes a talented band to wreak musical chaos yet still maintain catchiness and accessibility. Marvel do it with aplomb.
The boys share a relentless DIY ethic. They self-funded and recorded their first EP ’Marvel At This Fiasco’, self-made 500 copies and sold out of all of them in a matter of months. They also design and make all their own t-shirts, badges and web content. At home in the Island of Jersey, Marvel are infamous for ramming out abandoned restaurants and secluded scout halls with hundreds of party-hungry kids passionate about their music.
Marvel consecutively headlined slots for local acts at Jerseylive Festival in 2006 and 2007 sharing stages with the likes of Kasabian, The Enemy, Does it Offend You Yeah? and ¡Forward Russia! Marvel played Jerseylive for a third time this year - their two sets across the weekend, headlining the BBC Introducing Stage on Saturday and opening the Sunday mainstage was a thrilling homecoming which only reiterated their talent for staging a party.
In July, the Jersey Arts Trust took Marvel up a gear by backing their recording with critically acclaimed producer Jason Wilcock (Reuben, The Ghost of A Thousand, Fightstar, You Me At Six). The tracks strike precisely the right chord, capturing the sound of a band refined by endless live shows, brought forward by provocative songwriting, which belie the boys’ shared age of 20.
Marvel has partied all over the UK, gigging predominantly between London, Oxford, Manchester and Liverpool. Their April tour ended with two show-stopping sets on the World’s End Stage at Camden Crawl 2009. Their constant performing has been boosted by support from Radio 1, XFM, Kerrang! and NME radio who were all behind Marvel’s debut single ‘Guilty Party’ which, made Steve Lamacq’s top records shortlist of last year.
Marvel spent August writing, demoing and preparing a new and inspired live set which is on the road over September. Dates span across England, all the details for which are on the myspace. The band has exciting times ahead. Jersey boys, ay? There must be something in the water.
"Even just listening to Marvel makes me feel out of breath; fast, energetic tunes explode from this band"
