Mary Ann is an award-winning singer, musician, composer and broadcaster. Raised in a Gaelic-speaking family on the south side of Glasgow, she grew up in a multi-cultural community where two languages was the norm – Gaelic, Urdu, whatever. She now lives in the idyllic West Highlands with her husband, songwriter and sound engineer Nick Turner, where they own and run Watercolour Music with Killick the Belgian Shepherd.
From the moment she was born, she was destined for a life in music. Daughter of the iconic Gaelic singer and teacher, Kenna Campbell, she was brought up surrounded by Gaelic song and trained as a classical musician from the age of six. She went on to study as a pianist at the RSAMD in Glasgow and postgraduate research and training was at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where she was the first harpist in the college's history to be awarded its highest performance diploma. Her first love however is the traditional music that has surrounded her since birth.
She is one of a very small band of folk that have won both the Seann-Nòs and An Comunn Gaidhealach Gold Medals at the National Mòd, Gaeldom's premier festival of language and music, and was twice winner of the Concours International de la Harpe Celtique in Lorient, France.
Co-founder of award winning Gaelic 'super group' Cliar and the mighty, almost all-male ensemble Mary Ann Kennedy & Na Seòid, and a much sought after music producer, her passion for traditional music is matched by her love of new music and songwriting. As a composer, she has been awarded several commissions and most recently a trio setting of the Sorley MacLean poem, ‘Tràighean', for a major musical celebration of the poet's work.
She presents world music show ‘Mary Ann Kennedy’s Global Gathering’ for BBC Radio Scotland, and ‘World on 3’ for BBC Radio 3 in a fab rotation system with Lopa Kothari and Charlie Gillett.
In 2007, MAK was named Radio Presenter of the Year at the international Celtic Media Awards.
