Mary Ann Rossoni Builds a New Addition to Her Career with Timber & Nails, her Finest Recording
On her third album, Timber & Nails, singer-songwriter, painter, and all-around Renaissance woman Mary Ann Rossoni has finally managed to get the point across. “I finally feel like I had something real to say,” says Rossoni, “and I didn’t have any hang-ups about it.”
Over the course of her three solo projects, benefit tracks, and more when her acclaimed albums duet recordings are factored in, Mary Ann has explored meaningful and personal issues, but never has she been as eloquent or as passionate about them as she has on her new album. Perhaps its because in the five years since Mary Ann made her last album, she’s lived a little, grown up a lot, and begun to see the world in a very different light: her own.
Produced by Jack Gauthier at Lakewest Recording, the songs on Timber & Nails all come from special places. “It’s about as personal a collection as I could have written,” she says. Songs like the opening title cut attests to the intimate power of hearth and home. “Everything Needs Fixin’” addresses home (and personal) maintenance in very real and very humorous terms. An early morning walk in Mary Ann’s neighborhood inspired “On This Morning.” “Wondrous Impressions” describes metaphorically the close-knit bond of great friends.
Performed by a superb band that includes Joe Potenza on bass, Dave Lauria on guitar, Dan Hann on drums, Ginny McCormick and Betsy Dake's backing vocals and Cathy Clasper-Torch on violin, the material on the album is beautifully arranged.
Since 1998, when she started her career as a solo act, Mary Ann has made three recordings. Downcity, released on the Wall Street label, sold well and received national acclaim. Half Slips & Garters, her solo debut album back in 1998, also included a number of audience favorites, and served as the catalyst in building her fanbase.
Mary Ann grew up outside of Providence in Johnston, Rhode Island, graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design, and now lives in Providence, running a successful design firm in addition to her schedule as a busy musician. In addition to her work and music, Mary Ann is also an accomplished painter. She has already held a handful of gallery shows and envisions a time when she can create companion paintings to her songs.
