christmas carols, community, bike rides, heart to hearts, God's love, correct grammar, the power of prayer, old movies (see below!), great books, gardening, laughter, forgiveness, New York City, the big questions, playing basketball with my inter-mural basketball team-- Nuns on the Run (haha, I know), the rosary, diversity, Sunday dinners, Sr. Sue's key lime pie...
Music
confession: I love showtunes! I used to teach musical theater before entering the convent. Favorite musical (besides The Sound of Music)-- Westside Story. Other than that, all of the songs we sing in choir, classical, Gershwin, and my favorite song of all time: "Silent Night."
Movies
Song Of Burnadette, Chariots of Fire, The Miracle Worker, The Bicycle Thief, It's a Wonderful Life, The Bells of St. Mary's, Casablanca, A Man For All Seasons (all the classics!)
Television
no TV for me! instead you can find me riding my bike or rollerblading with the other sisters on the beautiful bike paths around the convent...it's quite a sight!
Books
I love The Brothers Karamozov, St. Augustine's Confessions, Dorothy Day's The Long Loneliness, and Pride and Prejudice (yes, a long time ago, even I dreamed of my Mr. Darcy) but I can't mention my favorite books without mentioning The Good Book: The Bible.
Heroes
Blessed Mother Theresa, His Holiness PJPII, Dorothy Day, Mother Mary, St. Francis of Assisi
About me: Not many people come to New York looking for poverty, chastity and obedience…but a few years ago, that was me: a wide-eyed Catholic school girl from Kentucky, visions of The Sound of Music dancing in my head, ready to commit to a wardrobe of black and white…for life. My family was worried, my friends didn't find it funny, and let's just say my husband was less than thrilled (okay just kidding about the last one—the only man I've ever married wears Birkenstocks and died for our sins!)…
Well, fast-forward to today, it's been a year since I've taken my final vows as a Sister of the Sacred Heart. I do miss my family from time to time, but I've got a whole gaggle of sisters here…it's like a family but without the fighting for the bathroom in the morning.
I have to say I've never been happier, anchored by my community to the peace and serenity of the spiritual call—praying, serving, reaching out amidst the chaos and commotion of this wild island we call Manhattan.
