I like hiking, biking, going to the movies, sharing good conversation over a meal, reading books, Sunday drives in the country, road trips, traveling to foreign lands.
Music
I like most music played on KCRW public radio in Santa Monica (89.9 on your radio dial and streaming on line at kcrwmusic.com)
I like the new Camera Obscura song, "Lets Get Out of this Country."
Movies
Recent movies I have seen and loved are Blood Diamonds, Babel, Volver, Little Children, and The Holiday.
Some old favorites are Traffic...actually like all Steven Soderbergh films. Also just loved Thelma and Louise, Out of Africa, White Palace,The Fisherking, Pulp Fiction, Crash (the one with Matt Dillon), Fight Club, and last, but not least, Mi Familia. Just love this movie, all the actors, and the man who wrote and directed it, Gregory Nava. That stone cold fox, Jimmy Smits, is in this film. There is a scene with Jimmy without a shirt. So sexy. I think I could love him forever.:)
Some Indie favorites are the old Hal Hartley films, especially loved Trust. Other Indies I enjoyed were Amores Perros, Magnolia, Cinema Paradiso, Orlando, Blood Simple, Sex Lies and Video Tapes, Lost in Translation.
Television
I like watching Six Feet Under, The Daily Show, Weeds, Law and Order SVU, Roseanne, and C-Span.
Books
Love all of Kurt Vonnegut's books. Also love books by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Barbara Kingsolver, Carlos Fuentes, J.D. Salinger, John Irving, Hanif Kureishi, Saul Bellow, Doris Lessing, Harper Lee, Herbert Marcuse, Dostoevsky, Camus, Flaubert, Zola, Celine, Orwell, et al. Too many to list.
Heroes
All the people trying to make the world a better place. And that includes parents trying to raise good children, teachers, doctors, nurses, human rights workers, social workers, environmentalist, et al.
Famous heroes would be Martin Luther King Jr., Salvador Allende, Che Guevara, Hugo Chavez, Jimmy Carter, Kofi Annan, Bill Clinton, Imad Moustapha (Syrian Ambassador in U.S.A.), and Cesar Chavez
About me: Most my friends think I am funny and a good story teller. But... I also think I am a good listener and love a good story.
I have lived in many places throughout the U.S.A. Mostly the major cities. I have lived in four countries abroad; London,UK, Wellington, New Zealand, Bogota, Colombia, and Gumi, S. Korea.
I have a degree from UCLA in history, but believe the best education was through my travels.
I am interested in documentary filmmaking. I made one short film on human rights abuses in Colombia. I would love to expand that into a feature length. Been trying to find funding for 5 years.
While waiting for "someone to show me the money" for the doc, I buy 2 lottery tickets per week.:)
If you feel inclined, you can view the film by clicking the link below. It's 12 minutes.
Or if you are really interested in what's going on in Colombia, you can go to my website (my film is streaming there as well) and read about Marino Cordoba, the history of the war, etc. at www.venturafilms.com.
Who I'd like to meet: Dream people I'd like to meet: Kofi Annan, Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, Dan Rather, Kurt Vonnegut, Neil Young, Betty Ford, and the man of my dreams, Gael Garcia Bernal, the Mexican actor in Babel. Don't think I have ever seen a man more beautiful in my life.:)
On this site, I'd like to blog and meet folks who are interested in engaging in a free exchange of ideas on a variety of topics. Music, books, politics, travel, etc.
I was encouraged to get a myspace account by friends who enjoy reading my emails. So I am trying this out.

Hi Mary, How are you, my friend? Long time, no speak. This new job of mine is keeping me hopping, in fact, I'm at work right now, hoping to go home soon. I hope all is well with you. Take the best of care and I hope to speak with you very soon. Michael
hi mary! how are things on your side of town? well, we're pounding away at the promotional aspects for "Love Goes On" and getting it into the right hands for review purposes! it's never easy, but you know... nothing so saps the profound resources of life as finding life too damn easy.
Thanks for your afirmation, Mary. Here was my reply to save you time:
"That's one in the eye for my old, sarcastic woodwork teacher. I was lousy at woodwork, you see: I could never make a dovetail joint fly, and a mortice-and-tenon was a branch of the Masons as far as I could see. So to find that I've hit the nail on the head at this late stage is all the affirmation of craftsmanship I could wish for."
And as for passing on the blog and all, sure. To quote Eliot Rosewater, "Be fruitful and multiply."
