Influences
Mary Jane have there musical roots in early 1970s folk rock.
An initial love of bands such as The Pentangle, Fairport Convention and The Trees, we have attempted to blend folk together with rock and psychelia.
A fascination with 1960s and 1970s counter couture lead us to seek out a diverse music collection with material as diverse Anne Briggs and Neu
Influences range from classic West Coast and Boston Psych bands like Jefferson Airplane, The West Coast Pop Art Experimental band and Ultimate Spinach, through English psych/rock/blues bands such as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Traffic, Ceam, Ten Years After , Small Faces, The Who, Family etc.
Lesser known bands such as Quintessence, Kindom Come, Comus, Saturnalia, Mellow Candle, Dando Shaft, ISB to name but a few have also provided great experiences which we have woven into our music and we continue to seek out new undiscovered jems.
Many solo artists have also been greatly influential, we are huge fans of 60's songster Roy Harper, John Renbourn, Bert Jansch, Davey Graham and Terry Reid to name a few.
Sounds Like
Obviously we say that we sound like Mary Jane!!!
We have however been compared to 60s/70s folk rock bands such as Fairport Convention, The Trees with our very English brand of folk rock with soaring high pure female vocals and rock rhythm section. We have also been compared to West Coast psych bands such as Jefferson Airplane, with our acid tinged lyrics and tripped out intrumentals. In the 90s we were compared to All About Eve and the Cranberries, due to the female vocals and our interpretations of Irish traditional songs and more recently to celtic bands like The Fold, The Blue Horses, Arlen, 18th Day of May and even Circulus due to the medieval connections ...we don't dress up in costume...much ;0)
Jo's vocals have been compared to just about everyone but to name a few: Jackie MacShee, Celia Humphries and Maddy Prior.
You need to imagine a very lively five piece band fronted by two bouncy females one who sings, plays lots of woodwind and dances a lot whilst the other one jumps upa dn down whilst playing fiddle solos and singing backing vocals. The rhythm section is rooted in rock with 70s retro guitar licks and acoustic bouzouki melodies, the sound being somewhere in between the Emerald Isle and the deep South. English folk rock meets American psych with a touch of Cajun for good measure.
MARY JANE play a highly original blend of acoustic & electric psychedelic folk-rock. The group’s consists of Jo Quinn (vocals, flute, fiddle), Gillie Hotston (fiddle, mandolin, vocals), Maggie Hawkes (harmony vocals), Paul Alan Taylor (guitar, bouzouki), Jon Hawkes (bass) & Steve Barker (drums). Their music is a very individualistic & varied combination of self-penned & traditional material, with strong Celtic, Eastern & Medieval influences.
Albums include Hazy Days, The Gates of Silent Memory, Tacit, and their latest To the Prettiest One. Mary Jane’s energetic stage shows have also become an increasingly popular live attraction at various festivals throughout the southern UK during recent years.
