Mary's Cakes Blues Café and Street Party
featuring live music with The Crème Brûlées!
Party Time: Thursday, August 7, 2008 from 6pm to 9pm
and Thursday, September 4, 2008!
Party Place: Mary's Cakes and Pastries
Located behind the Globe at 412 B, 22nd Avenue, Northport

The event is part of the Art Night Celebration held the first Thursday of each month in Northport and Tuscaloosa.

Who We Are:

The blues and food have always gone hand in hand and many blues tunes have sung the praises of food - barbecue, cornbread, collard greens, black eyed peas and blueberry scones. Blueberry scones? Yep - and "shortbread, chocolate chip cookies, pizza, toasted pimiento cheese, chocolate iced brownies (they're bound to please)."

All these delicious delicatessens, plus custom-made cakes from a bakery in downtown Northport, Alabama, have inspired a blues song entitled "Mary's Cakes." Written by local blues artists - the husband and wife team of Rick Asherson and Debbie Bond - the song features Rick on keyboards, vocals and harmonica, and Debbie on guitar. Backing them are Gary Edmonds on guitar and Jesse Suttle on drums.

The song, celebrating Mary's Cakes and Pastries in downtown Northport, was recently recorded at Tuscaloosa's Shamblin Sound Recording Studio.

The Crème Brûlées, featuring Debbie Bond, perform their new hit single as well as old favorites. The "Mary's Cakes" CD single is available for sale at Mary's Cakes and online at www.alabamablues.org/onlinestore.htm, with proceeds benefiting the Alabama Blues Project. Bond and Asherson are co-directors of the Alabama Blues Project, an educational non-profit organization based in Northport, best know for their award-winning after-school and summertime blues camps.

"We have been big fans of Mary's Cakes since she opened! We began performing regularly at Mary's Cakes as part of the Art Night festivities, then one night on the way home from a gig in Clarksdale, Mississippi, Rick and I were craving Mary's Cakes and came up with the song!" says Bond.

The Mary's Cakes Blues Café and Street Party is family-friendly and there is no charge for attendance. Sample sweet treats and children's art activities. Bring your appetite and your dancing shoes!
Who I'd like to meet:
About the Alabama Blues Project:
The mission of the Alabama Blues Project (http://www.alabamablues.org) is the preservation of blues music as a traditional and contemporary art form through interactive programs that educate and entertain. With educational programs, live performance, exhibits, and the development of archival and curriculum materials, the ABP increases awareness of the role blues music has played in the development of popular American music, with a special focus on Alabama's contribution to that history. Programs reach a wide variety of audiences, including at-risk and troubled youth, and its unique blues camps pass on Alabama's rich blues culture to the next generation while teaching self-esteem, discipline, cross cultural understanding, interaction, and teamwork.

About Mary's Cakes:
Mary's Cakes & Pastries, LLC (www.maryscakesandpastries.com) offers unique wedding cakes, grooms cakes, and celebration cakes, baked fresh in historic downtown Northport. Mary's Cakes makes gelato, cookies and pastries, serves a light lunch daily, and has a beautiful garden room available for private functions up to 40 guests.
