Influences
Number one music influence is this old fashion radio box of my father that diffusing al this stange symphonic music in my childhood. Number 2 is this radio station in my home town Cap-Haitian with the Voice of Bob Lemoine introducing jazz music from U.S.A playing music of Charles Mingus. George Berson, Nancy Wilson; Then my other influences are , for vocalists: Ela Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson, Sarah Vaughan, Leontine Price , Frank Sinatra Lou Rawls,Charles Aznavour , Stevie Wonder,and more. As instrumentalists: Stan Getz, George Benson, Oscar Peterson , Art Tatum, Charles Mingus,Art Pepper, Joe Lovano , Reggie Workman, Roy Hargrove( his rendition of "I remember Clifford" is 1 ), Mr Gordon and his sexy body language(yes!) and his unique sound of course!, Freddy Hubbard , Eddie Jefferson. After al is said and done I will say that my daughter Melanie is one of my influences in the way she articulates her lyrics with elegance(sarah Vaughn was gifted that way too! and also her poise and her vocal range , placement and the joy and comfort in singing moment to moment. As far as big band leadesrs I admire Quincy Jones, Roy Hargrove and his big band. Michel Legrand, Montovani, Mancini and Percy Faith and more.
Maryse Jean-Baptiste was born and raised in Haiti. She immigrated fo U.S.A with her family in the 80's Maryse started her education from scratch since she is of a foreign language background( french and creole) was trained and graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse at first and then continued her studies and graduated as a Registered Nurse. She served as a Staff Nurse for 17 solid years of her life as she specialized in Female Care. . Maryse is blessed with a daughter, Melanie JB Charles who is a music major and upcoming Junior at The New Scholl For Jazz And Contemporary Music(you can check her Myspace as "melaniesfromheaven".The other blessing is her son Rogerst JB Charles majoring in music as a freshman at The New School as well. Melanie and Rogerst are greately blessed themselves for being the offsprings of a woman who was raised and exposed to music, dance. musical theatre , drama and more. Maryse's peers and family tell the story about her creativity in early childwood as she started composing songs, huming melodies coming instantly to her head; lyrics that she would write and unexpected musical arrangment that she would come up with.! . .Because of her love for music, she made sure that her children started musical training early and remained consistent with the process and it has certainly paid off. Maryse has had the opportunity to travel with her daughter in her musical tours to Germany, British columbia, Italy and other cities within the U.S.A. At this point of her life, she is really claiming her own time to experiment her unusual and unique musical concept by bringing to life her childhood songs and new ones that were revealed to her by her Creator through-out her long journey.
