Mary V. Welk has drawn on her experience as an ER nurse to knock off sixteen characters in her "Rhodes to Murder" mystery series, winner of the 2002 Love Is Murder Readers' Choice Award for Best Series.
A Deadly Little Christmas was Mary's debut mystery and a finalist in the 1996 Hemingway First Novel Competition under the working title Four to Go. The book received a Readers' Choice Award for Best First Mystery in 2000. The Chicago Sun-Times said of it, "The novel shines for its scenes evoking the warm and fuzzy comforts of the holiday season." A Deadly Little Christmas was re-released under the title A Merry Little Murder in late autumn, 2007, by Echelon Press.
Echelon Press has released a new revised edition of the second book in the series, Something Wicked in the Air, under its new title, The Rune Stone Murders. This book was honored with a Readers' Choice Award in 2002 as Best Traditional Mystery. Romantic Times Magazine called this book, "A nicely woven campus mystery (with) characters so appealing you will think of them as friends."
A Chicago Sun-Times review of Mary’s third book, To Kill a King, called it a novel that "traces the political machinations of a large hospital beset with murderous intrigue." Her latest mystery, The Scarecrow Murders, deals with the trials and tribulations of motherhood and proves once again that even intelligent women can produce foolish offspring.
Mary's short stories include:
"The Case of the Fugitive Farmer" in Missing, released in February 2009 by Echelon Press;
"Code Blue" in Chicago Blues, released in October 2007, by Bleak House Books;

A MERRY LITTLE MURDER
ISBN: 978-1-59080-562-6
The psych ward's Christmas tree is artificial…
but the bomb concealed in its trunk is alive and
tick...tick...ticking!
It was nobody's fault, unless you counted the mice, and even they didn't mean to start trouble. A forgotten candy cane lured them to the Christmas tree stored in the basement of St. Anne's Hospital. The nibbling and gnawing just went on from there. Now there are holes in the trunk where none should be and not a single branch will stay in place. Despite this disaster, the nurses of Psychiatric Ward One are determined to deck the blues by decking the halls. When an anonymous donor sends them an artificial balsam, they happily press their patients into decorating it. But lighting the new tree ends with a bang!
Who planted the bomb that wrecks havoc in the little town of Rhineburg? A frustrated employee fired by St. Anne's despised administrator? A student terrorist from Bruck University? Or Caroline Rhodes, a nurse with a suspicious past who survived the explosion but refuses to discuss it?
Tagged as a suspect by the FBI, Caroline must prove her innocence by unraveling a devilish plot devised to eliminate one man's nemesis. Aided by history professor Carl Atwater, Caroline cuts through a maze of conflicting stories, red herrings, and downright lies to bring a killer to justice.
"Highly recommended… this one holds much promise."
