"Elliot brings innovation, imagination, intelligence, fire and fierce swing to the trombone"
- Michael Brecker
Elliot Mason sets the bar for jazz trombone/bass trumpet
- Randy Brecker
"Elliot Mason has to be one of the most important trombone/bass trumpet voices in modern music to emerge. He truly transcends the instruments he is undoubtedly already so supremely proficient in mastering to a level where I wasn't even aware it was trombone or a bass trumpet. To me, that's greatness. In Elliot you experience everything, from the most profound lyricism right over to the most intense, vital and truly electrifying. A most compelling, moving and exhilarating musician of today."
- Gary Husband
The Mason Brothers hail from Norwich, England, a quiet city 100 miles north of London. Their father, Barry Mason, a trumpet/trombone player and teacher, and their mother, Christine Vance, a jazz vocalist, introduced the young brothers early on to such greats as Dizzy Gillespie, Frank Rosolino, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. While only in their teens, Brad and Elliot became highly skilled in jazz improvisation and the Mason Brothers were soon renowned for their maturity and musicality. Alone, each musician is outstanding, but together, the brothers’ almost psychic connection creates improvisational magic. Today, the Mason Brothers are taking their unique contemporary sound beyond the boundaries of improvisation and composition to heights both dramatic and inspirational.
In 2007, Elliot Mason was invited to become a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra directed by Wynton Marsalis. While a permanent performer with JLCO, he continues to co-lead the Mason Brothers Band with his brother, Brad.
Elliot recently recorded on Matt Garrison's 'Shapeshifter' as well as touring & recording with Gary Husband's 'Force Majeure' featuring Randy Brecker, Matt Garrison, Jim Beard, Gary Husband, Jerry Goodman & Arto Tuncboyaciyan. Also touring with The Janek Gwizdala Project that features Gary Husband, Randy Brecker, Tim Miller & Janek Gwizdala.
Elliot is now the jazz trombone professor at Northwestern University School of Music, as well as joining the music faculty he hopes to be an intricate part of the jazz studies program.
The Mason Brothers have recently been endorsed by Applied Microphone Technology and Hercules stands.
Brad & Elliot both recently recorded with 'Sveti' featuring Lionel Loueke, Gregoire Maret, Aaron Goldberg, Gretchin Parlato, Marko Djordjevic & Matt Pavolka.
Brad is now performing with John Mayer, from his '07 world tour through to the present.
Their career includes performances with the Count Basie Orchestra, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Mingus Big Band, Maria Schneider Orchestra, Maynard Ferguson Big Bop Nouveau, Roy Hargrove Big Band, George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band, Toshiko Akiyoshi Orchestra, Chicco O'Farrels Latin Jazz Band, The Temptations, John Mayer, Jessica Simpson, Alicia Keys, Queen Latifah, Natalie Cole, Willie Nelson, Shirley Bassey, Bette Midler, Glenn Close, Wynton Marsalis, Joe Zawinul, Chris Potter, Randy Brecker, Mike Stern, Airto Moreira, John Abercrombie, Abe Laboriel, Kenny Wheeler, Hiram Bullock, John Scofield, Victor Lewis, Vincent Herring, Jim Beard, Jerry Goodman, Jeff Ballad, Gary Husband, Bob Hurst, Ronny Jordan, Marcus Roberts, Bill Watrous, Hal Crook, Slide Hampton, Carl Fontana, Claudio Roditi, Matt Garrison, Gary Burton, Lionel Hampton, Bill Pierce, Dave Liebman, Lenny White, Lionel Loueke, Gregoire Maret, Antonio Sanchez & others.
