Masondo, whose real name is Donald Mason was born in Freetown, Sierra Leone. He started his musical career in a high school band, and later played in bands like 'The Black preachers' with superstars like 'Lambrana, 'Jackson of Superb 7, 'Sierra Superstars' and 'Funky Explosion' He reached superstar status with a band called 'The Dukes', sister band of 'The Godfathers'. He left Freetown in 1981. After touring several African countries He settled for some time in Senegal, where he played in 'Orchestre Ginnick de dakar', sharing stage with musicians like Youssour Ndour and Jimi Mbaye in Gran Dakar. He later moved to Kolda in the Cassamance region where he played in a band called 'Orchestre Mossamolo'. In 1984, he decided to settle in Spain, with Barcelona as his base. In Spain, he played with a band called 'Songhai'. After several years of concerts and TV shows, he left the music scene to pursue a career in linguistics. He made a comeback in 1997 as a solo artist with 'Donald and the Maysuns', later 'Donald Mason Band' and finally 'Masondo'.

His music reflects the different styles he has been exposed to, plus his own particular touch of genius. Music, according to Masondo, is a neuro-biological product which in fact did not originate on earth. It has always existed with the universe. " The whole cosmos is a symphony ", says Masondo.

Masondo enjoys teaching, so he is always willing to travel around, giving lectures, doing workshops or clinics. He speaks about 14 languages. Being a trained linguist (he holds a doctorate degree in linguistics), he gives talks on language-based topics. You can check out his blogs above on some of these topics.
