Formed in Oct. 2004, Masonry originally consisted of Bob Buss (drums), Ed(bomber)Osburg (bass), and Chris 'Slapstick' Valenti (guitar, bass) The trio began banging out their odd tunes at the 'Hide House' a converted tannery cum practice space they shared with an ever-changing roster of crust and hardcore bands. A few months later they made their first live appearance at a benefit for the Riverwest Co-op, and shortly thereafter the band had earned a reputation as solid players with a penchant for delivering unorthodox yet melodic rock based instrumental tunes. In a rather frenzied attempt to make sense of it all some local music fans began throwing out weird hybridized labels to describe what they were hearing. 'Doom Prog' and 'Stoner Math' are two that come to mind. Utilizing an almanac sized musical pallet, Masonry combines many forms of modern music to create a more challenging form of rock devoid of the usual boundaries of genre. Both Ed and Chris are veterans of numerous musical collaborations and bands. In late 2006 Bob Buss quit amidst family pressures and flagging interest. Soldiering on Chris and Ed contacted Matt Vrabel(drummer for the legendary Shiny Object) a fellow oddball and musical reject who was rapidly tiring of the safe indy-pop stylings, bar rock and one-dimensional hardcore-new metal bands permeating the Milwaukee music scene. Being a fan of the band and looking to hone his Jedi skills, Matt instantly took the reigns on drums and never looked back. Although they base some of their music on specific influences and styles, Masonry is not necessarily trying to mimic other bands. "The 'cookie cutter' approach leads to a bland and generic musical culture. We take chances other bands won't and sometimes fall flat on our faces. We are trying to find success on our own terms and through the merit of our artistic abilities," states longtime bassist and founding member 'the Edbomber'. Masonry tends to write short anthemic musical stories describing the folly of modern man, the pursuit of independent thought and the desire for autonomy. Much of the bands thematic content revolves around self satire. The bands name has nothing to do with a worldwide cult conspiracy. "I guess only in the minds of our most paranoid fans" quipped Ed. Mill Valley is obviously the inspiration for Francis Ford Coppala to film Apocolypse Now. I am looking forward to seeing Mike "Dr. Mangle-a-dog " getting clipped at the knees and putting an end to this dog mutilators pathetic career this weekend. Way to go Packers!
