Sam, Corey, and Jacob began collaborating late in 2005 in Nashville, TN. It
wasn’t until early 2007 that Massillon was born, now with a catalogue of nearly two-dozen original songs. With their first
demo recording completed, Massillon is ready to get the show on the road.
Their songs range from light, poetic
pieces to heavy & loud – a typical description, but wait… “We want to be fun, without being quirky,” they say. “Heavy without
being obnoxious.” So, what exactly are they aiming for? “We’re not trying to blow you away with amazing, cutting-edge
novelty. We have the standard guitar & bass & drums & vocals, so, we’re not so much trying to do something new – just
good. As long as we get it out, it’s mission accomplished.”
From that description, you might be surprised what
happens when these young men “get it off their chests.” Despite their apparent polite & unangry attitudes, which shine
through during their performance, they manage to pump out music that can only be called rock. Massillon rocks. Their
specialty is performing poppy numbers with heavy sounds, which are offset by a front man who actually sings, and a bassist
that keeps two-part harmony quite alive. It goes to show that young musicians don’t have to be angry or contemptuous to
skillfully arrange loud, aggressive music that’s still somehow easy on the ears.
Ask about their influences and you’ll
get three different sets of rambling answers. So there’s more on their minds than music, but whatever that might mean, the
mixture results in musical singularity. “We’re just guys in a band. Describe it away, but reserve your judgment for the music
and the performance. And please never refer to us as emo.”
