Bio
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ENGLISH ----- I’ve been involved in music in the last thirty years or so and I’ve written reviews and articles for such magazine like ”“Folk Bulletin", Il Buscadero”, “Il Blues”, “Aliens”, “BRUM” as well as some local papers (“La Voce”, “Cronaca Sport” “Il Piccolo”, “La Stampa”). Most of my time has been spent in the radio activity: in fact I just started in 1976, in the very early days of the local radio movement, and since then I’ve never stopped working in that field contributing to some of best radio in my hometown. Years ago I arrived to Radio Voce Spazio where I still have two radio shows of mine: the first one is called “Highway 61”, it is son of my great friendship with Texan DJ. Eddie Russell, and it just deals with American roots based music (country, folk, blues, cajun, bluegrass, and so on). “Un Mondo Di Musica” (“A World Of Music”) was first aired in 1990 and it is still my personal vehicle to play a larger selection of folk, roots and world music from each corner of the globe. I was a founder member of Trata Birata association which is strongly connected to Tre Martelli, possibly the most lasting and famous band playing traditional music of my own region, Piemonte. I arranged their first British tour in 1986, when they played in some important folk festival like Pontardawe and Broadstairs, and I worked for them as a promoter and foreign correspondent until some time ago. I the town of Alessandria I’ve worked with the local authorities to present, promote and arrange concerts and other events concerning folk and roots music and I am the musical director of the festival called Etnomosaico since the turn of the century. In 2001 for the first I was called to be part of the jury of the “Folk Contest” that is an important part of Folkermesse music festival (and that happened again several times since then) and the following year I started contributing regularly to the Freeform American Roots chart run by John Conquest, the editor of 3rd Coast music magazine, and to the European Indipendents Chart (cured by the European Media Service). At present I am also a regular contributor to the Euro-Americana chart , Roots Music Report, and I am a member of the Roots Music Association and the Rainbow Smoke Network founded by Eddie Russell and Lord Litter, a free collective of international DJ’s playing the music of independent artists and labels. Since 2004 I am one of the journalists, DJ’s and other music personalities involved in “Città di Loano” award that selects the best Italian roots music album of the year. Some month ago I founded, along with some other good friends of mine, an association called Word Music Sounds to promote folk, roots and world music as well as the work of the contemporary songwriters. In 2009 I was also called to be a judge for the “Premio Teresa Viarengo”, given to the female artists in the folk/roots field, but above all the year before I had the privilege to be took into the important Club Tenco, reputed as the widest and most representative remarkable jury of journalists in Italy, and to contribute to vote for the Targhe Tenco, or the awards that are assigned to the best Italian recordings in the field of songwriting for more than three decades. Some month ago I founded, along with some other good friends of mine, an association called Word Music Sounds to promote folk, roots and world music as well as the work of the contemporary songwriters. In the past I also tried to play some dulcimer and guitar (but I think I am just one of the worst musicians in the world) as a member of Italian folk-rock band Dulcamara and gave some help to a couple of friends with their books, and particularly Danilo Arona for the updating of the Italian translation of the classic “Babylon Rock” and Horst Pohle for “The Folk Music Sourcebook”. "Un Mondo di Musica" and "Highway 61" are weekly avalaible on line here: http://www.highway61.it/Highway61/Elenco%20Playlists.htm --- http://www.highway61.it/UnMondodiMusica/Elenco%20Playlists.htm Bands, musicians and artists who wants their music is played in my radio shows can send me their albums to this address: MASSIMO FERRO - P.O. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Dulcamara was the band formed by Massimo Ferro in the late 80's to play a mixture of folk, pop and early music. They were influenced by Pyewackett, Strawbs, Albion Band, Malicorne and other folk-rock outfits of the 70's. The band recorded one album in 1988 with this line-up: Massimo Ferro (acoustic guitar, dulcimer, percussion, vocals), Marco Santi (keyboards and vocals), Mauro Piccirillo (electric, acoustic and bass guitars), Dino Scalabrin (violin and bass guitar), Giampiero Scazzola (drums, percussion, recorders and vocals), Gianni Robotti (saxes, clarinet, recorders) and Anna Toscano (lead vocals). -
Influences
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- English: Now that I an not a musician anymore (if I ever really was one), I am attracted by every kind of music that in some way finds its inspiration in the tradition; after all this is my daily musical diet and what you can hear in my radio shows too, that is both sounds more strictly connected to the folk idioms and new expressions open to different musical influences and styles, whichever they are, and even better if these are blended together. -
