Mass Potential is here to take the world by storm, reaching to new heights in the music industry. He strives to leave “bang-bang, shoot ‘em up” and millionaire dream lyrics behind, and bring back music for the new generation of Real Music Lovers. His mixture of old school hip hop and soul, rap and R&B not only shows his talent and originality in a the midst of duplicate artistry, but his love for music in general.
Born Michael Ulysese Jefferson on July 24, 1986, in Hampton, VA to a single family home, Mass has always shown an inclination toward music. Even in his early elementary school days, Mass was constantly reprimanded for “beating” on his desk and beat boxing in class. This didn’t make his mother too happy, but they were always supportive of his music. In middle school, Michael began to practice with his music, starting to record himself and write complete songs, and in high school he released his first of 3 mixtapes that he would go on to make in his high school career. Mass Potential could often be seen in his high school ciphers, whether it was beatboxing or freestyling himself. Often he was challenged to battles, many of which he proved to be victor. Many of his former high school classmates still have his last mixtape, released before his Graduation, entitled “Mass Potential Mixtape, Vol. 1” (to which, ironically, there was no volume 2).
Once he graduated, Mr. Jefferson left his home town of Laurel, MD (resident for 16 years) for Philadelphia, PA to attend the expensive and little known Philadelphia University. While there, Michael honed his skills and practiced his love for artistry as well as production. After a year there, Mass came back to the DC/Metro area, to attend University of Maryland, University College, where he still attends as a Senior.
Mass Potential uses his experiences in life and his abstract thoughts to craft his rhymes. But he explicitly will relay that it is not good enough for music to simply “tell a story” or “give you a view” but to run deeper, into the mind of the audience. Mass uses his gift to create a portrait that he wants his listeners to step into. Mass creates music that you can feel and apply to your own life. When you listen to a Mass Potential song, you say “yeah, he’s right” or “ I thought ‘I’ was the only one who noticed that”… Mass Potential makes music that can touch lives, while not becoming a guidance counselor or a pastor and club songs that your niece AND your grandmother will like. He crafts situations that make you comfortable. Finally, there is a hip-hop artist that understands exactly what YOU see.
