About me:
This page is dedicated to the memory of Sgt. Samuel E. Avery and all past and present serving members of the U.S. Army National Guard. Sam Avery was a true "Citizen Soldier"; one who lived for peace but trained for war and fulfilled his duty with honor on foreign fields of battle. He enlisted in the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia in 1912, served during the Mexican Border Campaign in 1916 and then was mobilized into the 26th "Yankee" Division as part of the American Expeditionary Force in Europe 1917-1919. As both a descendant and historian, it is my privilege to be publishing the collection of my great-uncle's letters home during his various deployments. This forthcoming book is called "SOLDIER'S MAIL: Letters Home from a New England Soldier 1916-1919". Some of Sam's individual letters are published here independently on the blog for your enjoyment. Additional information can be found on the complete SOLDIER'S MAIL website including letters, photos & more. Click on the image link below to march along with Sam. If you find resonance with your own experience in these letters from 90 years ago, please let me know. I would like to hear from you. Thank you for your service!
