Mat Gibson, a 29 year-old singer-songwriter from Herefordshire, England first began writing songs at 20 having been heavily influenced by his step-mother's large musical family in Boston, Massachusetts, and their love for rootsy Americana.
Mat found comfort in the music of alt. country pioneers, Whiskeytown and traced the genre back to the musical legacies of Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt and Woody Guthrie. But albums by the Rolling Stones, Neil Young and Gram Parsons would prove more integral to Mat's sound.
Mat's rural upbringing on a small farm in Herefordshire ended abruptly with the separation of his parents at 17 and following a long trouble-filled period, Mat found solace in music and songwriting as a way of expressing emotions that were otherwise hard to express.
Mat's songs drip with old-timey Americana tradition with a British tinge, moving from infectious melodic, alt. country pop/rock, aching ballads of loneliness and desperation through to all-out bar-room rockabilly.
Recognition for Mat's talent has come recently from the Nashville-based International Songwriting Competition, Mat's first such competition; 'Show Me The End' was voted as a semi-finalist in the folk singer-songwriter category.
'Home Movie'
A band was brought together at Miriam Audio, Manayunk, PA in January 2006 to record Mat Gibson's debut album. 'Home Movie' was recorded in just over a week and was cut almost entirely live except for vocal, pedal steel/organ and some guitar overdubs.
A decision was soon made that 'Home Movie' should be a band album despite the introspective and personal themes in Mat's lyrics. The Fallen Hearts include members of the Philadelphia-based band, Gringo Motel and friends of Mat from London, UK and Massachusetts.
'Home Movie' started out in France in the summer of 2005, where the majority of the songs on the album were written. In September that year Mat moved to London, he soon met guitarist Dominic Keshavarz and began putting plans together to fly out to New York to visit 'Home Movie' co-producer, Gringo Motel bass player and long-time friend Robert Hann to record the songs at Jesse Honig's studio, Miriam Audio, situated in the sleepy Philadelphia suburb of Manayunk.
Mat, now based in Quebec City, Canada is making strides towards a sophomore project.
"...like a youthful Neil Young at the Grand Ole Opry...on the relatively unadorned acoustic song “Home Movie,” a moving tale of failed relationships, missed birthdays and reminiscence he reaches up to the pathos that someone like Loudon Wainwright might achieve" Americana UK
"... his semi-fragile tone equal measures Ryan Adams and Conor Oberst..." Maverick
"...enticing nods to The Band, Gram Parsons and CSNY, make this album such an entertaining ride..." Overplay
Recorded at Miriam Audio in Manayunk, Pennsylvania by Jesse Honig and Robert Hann, 'Home Movie' is the debut album by Mat Gibson & The Fallen Hearts - Now only £6.99 with Paypal UK or $9.99 from CD Baby
Ever wondered what to do in the event of a nuclear threat?
A while ago I found stuff that inspired me to make this film:
Living Under the Shadow of the Nuclear Umbrella
Both artistic (ensure you get the background music!) and educational, it primarily comprises official British government civil defence advice.
Though source materials are quite aged, much remains relevant today.
