About me:
ATTENTION! We had a MySpace with over 2000 friends for over a year, but for some strange reason it was gone one day. We're back, so please add us again!
Ever joked about having MATH DYSLEXIA? Well, it's real. At least according to The World Health Organization (F81.2) and DSM (315.1). Studies show that 4 to 6% of the World population is affected by dyscalculia. Have YOU ever heard of it? Probably not. The ignorance surrounding dyscalculia means that most dyscalculics don't even know that it exists. That they are not alone. That they are NOT stupid and lazy. That they CAN learn mathematics, but just need different learning methods. Just like dyslexics.
We need to change that. We need to spread the word. To be corny, but litteral; Dyscalculics count too.
This profile is maintained by the people behind The Dyscalculia Forum - A teacher from Australia, a mother from Germany, and a dyscalculic from Denmark. We're not trying to sell you anything. Our only goal is to spread the word.
Add us to your friends, maybe your top friends if you have room for a good cause, and feel more than free to share the comment images below. And don't forget to check out The Dyscalculia Forum where you can talk to 1700+ people just like you.
A while back we started to discuss if there should be a dyscalculia awareness day, and since a lot of you liked the idea we have made it official: the first international dyscalculia day was in March 2008 - 03.03.08. In 2009 it was on March 3 - and as you might have guessed, March 3 is the date every year.
We've made a new subforum to plan the dyscalculia day, and we need you to join the discussion. All of us decide what to do on the day and how we should do it, so come join us! No one else is fighting for us, so WE need to speak up.
Who I'd like to meet: Dyscalculics, Teachers, Parents, Siblings, Cousins, Friends, Boyfriends, Girlfriends, Wifes, Husbands... Samantha Abeel, Renee M. Newman, Brian Butterworth, Steve Chinn, Mahesh Sharma, Bjørn Adler... and YOU!
I always used to mix up numbers in my math class in high school. I used to joke and say that I had number dyslexia. That is, until one day I was watching Degrassi, and one of the characters had discalculia. I knew right then that was what I had.
I went through most of my schooling until freshman year in college with it and nobody knew. In the math classes where I had to show my work, my teachers were always confused. They'd say "We can see you know how to do the problem, you just somehow get lost in the middle and the numbers go wrong..."
My Chemistry teacher figured it out- when I came to him saying that balancing equations was hard for me he sat down with me and saw. He gave me a couple of pointers- and from that point on.. while I'm very slow at math, it did become a bit easier.
But I had no idea, absolutely none at all. Double, triple, and quadruple checking numbers is annoying... but I don't have it as bad as some-
And I'm glad there's groups and pages about it. Thanks for finding me and adding me to your new profile!
Thank you so much for the add! I am a college graduate who has Dyscalculia and let me tell you--what a struggle! In my mind, I embrace the qualities I have and try and let go of the ones I cannot hold, however painful that may be. Ask the blind to see, and they cannot and are not expected to. Ask the deaf to listen and they cannot and are not expected to. Ask a paraplegic to walk and they cannot and are not expected to. Ask me to do math, and I cannot, but AM expected to. I am blind to math. I look at it and cannot make sense of what is before me. I am deaf to math. You can tell me the same formula 1,000 times over and I will not comprehend it. I am paralyzed in life, because I cannot do what schools expected of me so long ago. It's time to reform our educational system. It's time things change. If I can help in any way, shape or form, please let me know. It's time the world sees us, hears us, and walks with us.
I am starting college again but not taking algebra this semester because I have failed it three times already however i know that I will have to take it next semester... Any suggestion???? Please??
