Undo Hate - End Discrimination

About me:

My name is Mathew Guiver, and am I a gay American living in Sacramento, and after prop 8 passed I wanted to do something to get involved. But After going to a few rallies and protests, I felt like there was still more that I could do. That is why I started a new project aimed at undoing the effects caused by Proposition 8. As part of my project I have launched a new blog, located at UndoHate.com where I post new and information on gay rights in California. I strongly encourage you all to check out my blog, and to tell all your friends and family about it!

As many of you already know, when prop 8 passed it took away not only the rights of millions of gay Californians, but it also effectively handed a divorce to over 20,000 married couples just because they were gay. This IS discrimination, and writing discrimination into the California constitution should not be allowed. We need to take action, and my goal with this project is to keep the dialogue going.

Prop 8 was a small set back in the overall goal of seeking equality for all Americans. This is a long-term battle, and I think it is important to remember that there are still 30 states in this country that you can get fired from for just for being gay. There are even states where gay couples cannot adopt children. Unfortunately, getting equal rights is going to be a long battle, but I am confident that we will win in the long run.

GET INVOLVED
Do not just sit on the sidelines and let this fight pass you by. The California Supreme Court has decided to hear a series of cases regarding the legality of Proposition 8. It is more important now than ever to do something about Prop 8. Listed below are details on how you can take action to undo the effects of Prop 8, but please check the What Can I Do? page on our website for more information, including banners you can add to your MySpace page!

1. Email the CA Supreme Court Justices
As I am sure many of you may have heard, the California Supreme Court decided to hear several legal challenges regarding Proposition 8. The fight is still on, and it could be months before the Supreme Court issues a decision on Proposition 8. In the mean time, make sure to share your opinion with the Justices who will decide this case! You can send an email to all of the Justices at equalaccess@jud.ca.gov. But be sure to address all of the judges by name at the top of your email to ensure that they all receive it.

2. Contact Arnold
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has already spoken out against Proposition 8 and said that he supports overturning it. By emailing him you can not only thank him for his support, but also encourage him to continue fighting. 3. Contact your State Legislator
The California Assembly and Senate have the power to overturn proposition 8, but they need a 2/3 majority vote. We elect these people to represent us, and it is important that you let them know how you feel about prop 8. Check out LegInfo.gov to find your Assembly and Senate member’s contact information. Just enter your zip code and it will look up your members based on the district you live in.

4. Write the Attorney General
The California Attorney General Jerry Brown has also spoken out asking the California Supreme Court to help decide the fate of proposition 8. The courts have also asked Brown for his assistance in deciding the issue. Listed below is the address of the Attorney General’s office, please take the time to at least write out a quick note about your feelings on proposition 8.
