Who I'd like to meet: You!
Why not join me at the most fabulous place on earth... Oakland California's Paramount Theatre!
It is my great pleasure to guide a tour through Timothy Pfluger's Art-Deco masterpiece of architecture from 1931. 2 hours of splendor amid almost 3,000 seats in one of the few remaining movie palaces in the United States is yours for just $5.00 on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month, 10am sharp. Meet me at the 21st street Box-Office vestibule. 2025 Broadway @ 21st Street, Oakland.
It’s that most transcendent time of the year which means the witching hour will soon be at hand. Time for all my dear ghosties and ghoulies to materialize at the old Alexander Ranch homestead again!
..
We begin at the Stroke of Midnight as October 31st turns to November 1st and thus All Hallowed Eve shifts to All Saints Day and the Dead of the Dead. Twice the holidays, twice the fun. Of course Spirits will be provided…..
..
I hope you won’t mind pot luck….
..
And as we dance by the light of the moon, may a splenderous time be had by all!
Hello there, boys and girls…..in an effort to unwind after a hard week on the old Warner Brothers assembly line, I do like to commiserate with my fellow inmates by horseback riding out to their nearby homes. We’ve signed up for a course in Encino ranching and I’d say we’re all doing a-okay for a group of city slickers. My nearest neighbors are these two crazy kids, Everett Edward Horton and Hugh Herbert. ..
Our Mr. Horton contemplating life at Belleigh Acres on Amestoy Ave. That’s his horrible pun, by the way, not mine. ..
Here’s Hughie, up to his renowned woo-woo in feathers and eggs. ..
Over on Encino Ave., Warren William is dressed to the teeth, ready to man that tractor and trust me, this is nothing. Wait till you see the spats he sports when spreading fertilizer. ..
Al and Ruby Keeler Jolson’s 12 acre spread is over on Louise Ave. ..
Al was named Honorary Mayor of Encino and yet, he still finds time to keep up his busy schedule including posing with close personal friends and purchasing postage stamps. .. (Note to self, pick up butter and bread.)
And finally, here is Warner’s most famous Encino resident. I’ve caught him a number of times, in my back acreage, poaching carrots. Wrasically wabbit, indeed!
HOORAY! It’s Independence Day…even for Warner Brothers
actors who have been isolated on location for the past two months. Freedom at
last, if only for one weekend! I so want to wish all of my beloved gals and
pals a crackling good holiday; have yourselves the best darned Fourth of July
ever!!
Golly! Nothing says Happy New Year like having a strangle-hold upon one's beloved's throat, sitting on a snowy ledge high above the city, with a sharp edged broken bottle nearby, drunk on your butt. With that thought in mind, I want to wish you an insanely Happy 2009, Matias!
Enthusiastic, yet non threatening holiday hugs~ Ross
Matias Bombal, s'been awhile my friend. Hey, if you're so good at being an MC why don't you just announce a message my way sometime, huh? Haha. I hope you're doing well, man. Talk to you later, hopefully. (James)
Hello gals and pals! Jack Warner calls, I must obey, so it's back to sunny California I go. Saw some interesting sights from my train compartment window...
Not being fond of fishing (I oft times pity anything caught on a hook, including Warner contract players), nothing about these guys changed my mind about the ol' rod and reel.
It's reassuring that America's farmland is thriving so well.
I knew Texas grew *everything* big, but this takes the cake. And would eat it too (and probably your arm as well.) Still humming 'My Little Bunneroo'...apologies, apologies.
But Texas ain't got nothing on California's peaches!
Home at last; now it's just a matter of fighting the heavy traffic back to my San Fernando Valley ranch to have time to hug each and every one of my animals and rest up for tomorrow's 6:00am set call. Oy.
GREETINGS FROM BROOKLYN! I've been back East, visiting my birthplace, just checking in with old friends and places....
I wandered the campus of Erasmus Hall High, where I attended but *didn't* graduate.
Drove across Brooklyn Bridge just to ensure that it hadn't been sold.
I was only six when old Washington Park was demolished and Ebbitts Field was built, but I remember it like it was 94 years ago. So I dropped by, hoping to catch the Brooklyn Bums, but the day I was there, the Dodgers had taken a powder...
The beach was a little over crowded; I'm the one in blue shorts.
Spent last weekend at Coney Island; the Steeple Chase still crosses my eyes.
Next I'll be spending some time in NYC and then on to Rochester to see my folks. Will be writing again soon. Hope these cards find you doing and feeling swell, Matias!
Hello Matias! I've been visiting a lot of old haunts with my pals and gals from Broadway.
Stayed at the Sherry Netherlands facing Central Park. As usual, we're the tall one in the middle. ..
I enjoyed a great deal of time visiting, seeing some shows and just talking shop with the gang. Didn't know I'd miss the theatre district so much...Times Square never looked so good.
It wouldn't have been a stay in town without catching the latest at Radio City Music Hall.
And of course a day in Chinatown... Love the atmosphere, love the food and as soon as I leave, in an hour I want to go back!
Spent part of Sunday with the boss; figured it couldn't hurt. ..
And now I'm off to Rochester to celebrate the 4th with my folks! ~Ross
Hey there buddy...I'm sending you some love on your birthday...Ahhh...what a relief eh?...We're getting older Mijo but wiser too...don't fret...everything will be alright...hang tight...I miss you dearly...I hope to see you soon...kissess & squeesy hugs....
Hello there my beautiful friend! Well, I want to be the first one to wish you a happy birthday! I miss and love you very much. I am still down here in Michoacan. Start my job in Puerto Vallarta on the 27th of June. Before then, however, I might be headed out to China for a couple of days con un empresario, como interprete.
Hi there, Matias! I've been spending this week working in my garden at my ranch, challenging the small weeds, pretending to trim the larger ones. Thinking I was alone, I suddenly had the oddest feeling that I was being watched....
But it was when these two stared me down and threatened to wrestle away my clippers, that I surrendered and mustering as much dignity as possible, retreated to my patio and a pitcher of chilled wine. And it is there where you shall find me in the late afternoon for the remainder of the week.
Do feel free to join me, dear friend and help me to ignore both the weeds and their rude occupants.
Oh Matias! Thank you for adding the photos! You're such a dapper man and it's been such a long while since I've seen you in person! Wishing you well :)
Spring has definitely sprung here on my Encino ranch....everywhere I look there are buds, blossoms and flowers.
And weeds.
Lots and lots of lovely weeds and sage brush in the back acreage. Good thing I'm buried in up to my neck with my manuscript so I can ignore them.
But I can't ignore you, my friend! Hope you'll be enjoying a truly wonderful upcoming week, Matias. What a wonderful surprise to hear from you....hope everything is all well and swell in your corner of California. Thank you *so* much for dropping by; know that you're always welcome!
