Matt Baranello is a drummer, percussionist, and composer much in demand for the energy, taste, musicianship, versatility, and knowledge that he brings to every musical situation. Matt is equally fluent in Jazz, Afro-Latin, and American popular styles. While his primary instrument and focus is drumset, he is an equally gifted percussionist specializing in congas, bongos, timbales, and the sacred Afro-Cuban bata drums.
Matt has been a professional musician since 1995. He has studied with Randy Knudsen, Dom Famularo, Al Miller, Ralph Peterson, Jr., John Riley, Carlos “Go-Go” Gomez and many other notable drummers and percussionists. He received a Bachelors of Music in Jazz Performance from the Manhattan School of Music in 1999.
Matt has performed with many great musicians and groups such as Eartha Kitt, Ronny Jordan, Jimmy McGriff, and Carlos Gomez’s “Rhumbamerica”.
In addition, Matt has toured the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and Germany with various musical groups. He can be heard on countless recordings featuring a wide variety of musical styles such as Jazz, Heavy Metal, Afro-Cuban folkloric, Afro-Latino Soul, R&B, Hop-Hop, Rock, Folk, and everything in between! He recently produced and played drums on the track “Games” for his brother Adam Baranello’s recording “From Scratch”. Matt can also be heard playing percussion on the sound track for the independent film “Lucha Libre”. In 1998, Matt was consecrated as an Omo Ayan* by Carlos”Go-Go”Gomez.
Additionally, Matt is a dedicated educator, currently on staff at Intunation New Jersey, where he teaches drumset and percussion. Currently, Matt is a member of Bryan Vargas& iYa Esta! and the Nate Lucas Group.
