hi i'm matt, and thank you for visiting me here!
i am a former student of classical / avant garde saxophone professor dr. john sampen at bgsu in ohio and now i am a solo saxophone player living in cincinnati, ohio.
some people have asked me why i play solo when i could be playing in a band, and the reason is simply freedom.
my style is more or less an ambient, open and free melodic style that relies heavily on longer tones and folk-like melodies. in addition to melodies i also sometimes also use more modern saxophone techniques like key clicks, breath effects, and multiphonics to help create the distance and echoes in my music.
the music i play is heavily influenced by places of desolation, emptiness, and the great open spaces (both that i've seen and those i long to see).
i have released five albums to date, "drifter", "deserter", a duo record with guitarist eric barnett titled "beauty bent, not broken", "grounded" my blues record, "last days on the lawn" my live record (it's free by the way) and my sixth solo record "an island" is slated for release on reverb worship records sometime later this year.

Your new albums are fan-f*&-ing-tastic! The amazing part is I love each for completely different reasons... if you had asked me six months ago if two solo saxophone albums could be so different and so good, I would have been unsure. Thanks for being a friend and collaborator - I can't wait until next time...

p.s. what did you think of the Dark Knight? I was so completely blown away I'm going to see it again today just to make sure I wasn't dreaming...
i can express how nice it is to go to sleep right after listening to your stuff...still thinking about ya and how much i wanna do a show with ya sometime...i hope you are well --sam--
Hey Matt- Thanks for the invite. I’ve been listening to your tracks when I get time. So far I like the ‘Drifter’ works. They definitely sound Ohioan. If you’d like more Snapping Turtle you can hear the entire debut album for free at http://www. savageyankrecords. com/snappingturtle
oh yeah?? well i can compliment you more! honestly though...out of all the bands/people i've seen play a show with eric (and/or i) you blew them out of the water...i'm jaded music listener, and i believe you should have a well paid career in music forever...isn' the music industry suppose to bow to actual talent every 10 years? ::raises head:: and i'd also love to play another show with ya --sam--
That was awesome last night. It made me feel almost like a real musician to be able to play with people of your caliber. I'm definitely looking forward to May 31 / June 1. I think we could come up with a pretty kick ass album in just a couple of hours. Also, I'm playing in Columbus on June 14th - would you be interested in playing on that show? You could do your solo stuff and maybe we could do a few together? Let me know.
That's awesome man, let me know when I can buy a copy. I'm still holding down the fort up here in T-town, playing and teaching. I'm recording at the White Room in Detroit tomorrow w/ Chavar.
