Profile:
Fed on a childhood diet of blues, soul & synth pop, Matt Chester’s musical outlook was blown away when he first became exposed to Detroit techno, Chicago house and the UK scene in the form of ‘The Final Frontier’ by Underground Resistance, and the work of Peacefrog, Andrew Weatherall, Warp and the like.
Knowing this sound was to change his life forever he lay down his guitar and saved every penny for a set of cheap turntables, working night and day to hone his skills to match that of his new heroes; Claude Young, Andy Weatherall & Derrick May.
Soon just DJing wasn’t enough, and he began producing his own tracks with what little gear he had available, fast developing a unique sound that combined the funk & soul of Detroit with the tough grooves of Chicago & the futuristic atmospheres of UK electronics.
In 1999 he began the online magazine ‘11th Hour Technology’, primarily as a way of showcasing the labels & artists he loved together in one place, and to provide extensive links to all aspects of the music business on a then fledgling and disparate internet.
This finally gave rise in 2003 to his own label, 11th Hour Recordings. He released his first EP, ‘Into The Fall’ to great critical acclaim, with Germany’s DeBug magazine hailing it as the ‘finest debut of the year’, and UK’s DJ Magazine stating ‘if this is only his debut, just imagine what he will become capable of’. DJs around the world were also fast to pick up on his sound, with strong support coming from Laurent Garnier, Dave Clarke, Derrick May, Anthony Shakir, Fabrice Lig, Dan Curtin and many more.
He has since released several more EPs on 11th Hour and other labels to equally great reaction, with 2008s ‘Endless Days’ getting ‘electro single of the month’ in DJ magazine, and 2009s ‘Die For A Reason’ 5/5 ‘essential single’ in DMC, as well as rave reviews on Resident Advisor, DeBug etc
Lately he has also begun remixing for other artists, and in the last year has released mixes of DJ 3000, Terrence Dixon, Paul Mac, Marco Bernardi and more.
Matt is renowned these days for his extraordinary DJ skills, playing with a fluid and energetic fast-cut style, usually appearing on 3 decks & on some occasions with additional drum machine. Eschewing the dull monotony of current minimal obsessions, his dynamic sets take in a wide range of styles, seamlessly cutting techno, electro & house with the likes of Prince & Funkadelic.
He also began performing his own material live in 2006, as a special guest at a UR party in London. Inspired by artists such as Carl Craig & Shawn Rudiman, he plays live as an improvised performance directly off synths & drum machines, with no laptop or pre-programmed Ableton file in sight. Each set is performed completely off the cuff, a fluid unbroken jam blending in snippets of his released material alongside drum grooves and synth lines made up right on the spot, lasting anywhere from 90 minutes to 4 hours.
