Profile:
Born in Canada in 1979 but growing up in the UK, Matt first became
exposed to electronic music through the work of Detroit legends
Underground Resistance in the early 90s, and never looked back
since. Brought up on a diet of funk, blues and synth-pop, Detroit's
fusing of this sound with energetic machine rhythms and lush synth
grooves proved irresistible...
At 16 he began producing his own music, starting to DJ at the same time . A passion for the fast paced and exuberant styles of Derrick May and Claude Young quickly led to him
making this style his own. Over the last few years his funk driven 3
deck sets have rocked crowds across Europe and he has guested alongside artists such as Suburban Knight, Octave One, Fabrice
Lig, Mark Broom, Jay Denham, Titonton Duvante and many others.
He has also been responsible for Londons Flashpoint series of parties,
alongside fellow local techno and ghettotech crew, Non Stop DJs.
Since 1999 he has been involved in the 11th Hour Technology web project, and began his own label 11th Hour Recordings on the back of that in 2003. This has become an outlet for
his own take on the Detroit sound mixed with a European edge, and has so far featured releases from Shawn Rudiman and Arne Weinberg, as well as his own material.
He released his first EP, ‘Into The Fall’, in 2004 on 11th Hour Recordings to great critical acclaim, with Germany’s DeBug magazine hailing it as the ‘finest debut of the year’, and UK’s DJ Magazine stating ‘if this is only his debut, just imagine what he will become capable of’. DJs around the world were also fast to pick up on his sound, with strong support coming from Laurent Garnier, Dave Clarke, Derrick May, Fabrice Lig and dozens more.
Since then he has released 3 further EPs on 11th Hour to equally positive reaction, as well as EPs for Paul Mac’s Sula Muse and Fabrice Lig’s Melodika imprints, and has remixed Detroit’s DJ 3000 and Terrence Dixon amongst others.
His latest EP on 11th Hour, ‘Endless Days’ featured a DJ3000 remix and is out February 2009 - already having gained extremely positive critical reaction, with DJ magazine featuring it in 2 consecutive issues, giving it 5/5 and ‘Electro single of the month’. It also gained 5/5 in DMC update and strong reviews in several other publications, as well as being played and charted by several high level DJs and getting plenty of airtime on BBC radio.
He is renowned for his extraordinary DJ skills, playing with a fluid and energetic fast-cut style, usually performing on 3 decks & on special occasions with additional drum machine.
He has played across Europe and North America, performing in London, Detroit, Glasgow, Vancouver, Rotterdam, Frankfurt, Vienna, Athens, Prague, Cologne and many other cities, and has appeared alongside artists such as Derrick May, UR, Surgeon, Octave One, Jay Denham, Autechre, Convextion, Andy Weatherall and many more.
Since 2006 he has also been playing live – live, that is, directly off synthesisers and drums machines, no pre-programmed laptop sets. Each set is performed completely off the cuff, an improvised jam blending in snippets of his released material alongside drum lines and synth jams made up right on the spot, lasting anywhere from 90 minutes to 4 hours! His debut live set was performed as a special guest alongside the Underground Resistance crew in London, and he has since taken it on the road across Europe.
