Matthew Price was born in the small, rural town of Silverton, Oregon in 1977. His father, Dale Price was the director of Canyonview Camp, a Christian youth camp outside Silverton. As a young boy, Matthew would listen as his dad played folk songs and Christian choruses around the campfire beneath a starry sky. It was in this pure form that Matthew witnessed the natural, musical, and spiritual worlds blending together in perfect harmony.
It was only natural that at age 16 Matthew would begin to learn to play campfire songs using his dad’s guitar. He and his close friend, Mat Langeliers, who was also learning guitar, would nightly stay up until the morning hours picking their guitars. In addition to the songs Matthew Price’s father played, they became interested in the bluegrass and cowboy songs of Doc Watson, Marty Robbins, and many others. They found that these songs possessed a certain story and heart that always resonated with listeners. It was during these countless nights around campfires, that Matthew Price learned of the joy that music could bring.
Besides sharing a love for playing the same kind of music, Matthew Price and Mat Langeliers also held in common a curiosity for the world. Over the following years, they traveled through Alaska, Canada, Mexico, Ireland, England, Scotland, all over Western and Eastern Europe, and eventually Australia. All they needed was a sleeping bag (usually) and a musical instrument (always!) As Matthew and Mat played music with people everywhere, they found that everyone seemed to love those old cowboy songs. No one could resist a good story.
It was while driving along the coast of Southern Australia, surfing and camping, that Matthew was first introduced to the music of Ben Harper. He was impressed by the soul and passion with which Ben sang. There was a deep, authentic, emotional connection between the words and music that resonated in Matthew’s soul and would eventually become an influence in his own music.
After returning from Australia, Matthew moved to Bend, Oregon to work at Mount Bachelor and experiment with the ski bum lifestyle. It was there that he met fellow songwriter, Joey Hodgson. Matthew and Joey formed a mutually encouraging friendship where they helped each other to grow as writers. Matthew recalls, “We would meet up to share our latest songs and I knew that if I didn’t have some new material, Joey would give me a hard time. He pushed me. He is an amazing friend and songwriter and is an inspiration to me.” Their friendship continues to this day and only gets better with time.
In 2007, Matthew began performing in Salem and Portland, Oregon and joined the Portland Songwriters Association. Besides winning songwriting awards and making friends and fans through PSA, Matthew simply enjoys being a part of a songwriting community that helps each other improve their craft and achieve their dreams.
Matthew Price describes his music as soulful campfire folk rock. His life has been a magical, musical journey and the songs he writes are simply a natural overflow of the passion with which he lives. His music is as genuine as his father’s campfire songs, tells captivating stories like Doc Watson and Marty Robbins, and has a soul and passion reminiscent of Ben Harper. Matthew’s music is a part of him and as you listen, you will get to know him. In fact, as you listen, you will probably even get to know yourself a little better.
